Hands-On Math For Sixth Graders
Funded Feb 24, 2015The students were able to experience how to turn 3-D figures such as prisms and pyramids into nets to find out their surface area. It is very difficult for students to understand turning a 3-D figure into a plane. I think by providing students with hands on materials for them to experience how a 3-D figure is turned into a net it will make an imprint in their memory that they will be able to transfer into their studies. Regular math books and pictures are not enough for this kind of content. Thanks to these materials the students touched, questioned, transferred information and, more important, simply learned. Oh - and they had fun, too! Thank you, sir!”

6th Grade Warriors
Funded Dec 19, 2014Thank you so much for these books! The kids love them. They were very keen to read the Warriors books after they attended the author presentation and they were disappointed that we didn't have the books ready for them. (Of course, books were available for purchase after the author presentation but our students don't have much money.) When the Warriors books arrived from Donors Choose, the children were thrilled. They have been reading the books ever since. Thanks a million for helping our students!”

Choosing Healthy Lunches And Learning Math, Too!
Funded Apr 25, 2013Thank you! Your gift is just what my students wanted and needed! When my sixth graders began studying at our school, back in the good old days before educational funding dried up, we had a Nutrition teacher. She would teach the younger students about diet and exercise using hand puppets and videos. The lessons included a healthy snack. A few evenings a year, she would even hold
cooking classes for our parents. As you can imagine, Nutrition classes were very popular. That all stopped a couple of years ago. We couldn't get funding for them. We try to keep giving our kids the right message about diet and exercise, but it is obviously much more difficult to do without our specialist. This is why your gift has proved so valuable. While teaching graphs and equations, I get to teach the children about a healthy diet. I'm getting to hit two birds with one stone: Math AND Nutrition. The kids are very interested in healthy eating. They miss their Nutrition teacher. Thanks to your books, we get go over some of the ground that she covered - and the kids enjoy learning Math, too. It's great!”

Funded Mar 14, 2013Thank you so much for buying us this classroom set! The books present the math very well. The pages are well laid-out: they are not too crowded with text, and the illustrations are great. I love how they make the math relevant to everyday life. When I was at middle school, math seemed just a subject that we had to study. The closest it came to being relevant to real life, I remember, was when we had to calculate how much carpet we'd need to cover some floor space. But what teenager ever needs to carpet a floor? However, every teen eats out from time to time. Every teen wants to look and feel good. That's why it is such a great idea to involve teens in math by showing them how to use math in restaurants. My students are learning how to work out the nutritional value (or otherwise) and price of restaurant meals. This class set is going to be very useful in my math class, for years to come.”
