Engineer Makerspace
Funded Sep 25, 2016We have been using our new resources to learn about sculpture and architecture. One the central problems students have been dealing with is balance. For inspiration we looked at famous structures like the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, The Great Pyramid of Giza and The Chrysler building. Students learn to build height, width and depth and develop creative solutions to structural problems.
At first, when students saw the new materials they were extremely curious. Once they realized we would be using them throughout our sculpture unit they became excited and thrilled! After introducing these new resources I often hear students saying "I love this class!" They enjoy telling me about their structures. Some students are fascinated by building homes; others love to challenge themselves by building the highest tower they can make without collapsing.
As we continue our sculpture unit, students in fifth grade will use the strategies they have learned to take two-dimensional designs of irregular quadrilaterals and grow them into three-dimensional s structures. First, second and third graders will be connecting what they have learned about balance to building standing armatures. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten will continue to explore these resources in a variety of centers or stations focusing on building three-dimensional structures.”

Funded Dec 2, 2014Third grade students were so excited and thrilled to see the drape molds your donations helped us purchase. They wanted to thank you personally and thought it was a very kind act. All the students in third grade became so much more motivated and engaged with making a Day of the dead mask due to your generosity. We are working on this project with two third grade classes. One of the third grade classes is an ICT class; this means many of the students in this class have special needs thereby requiring two teachers and other unique modifications to help the students succeed. Thanks to your contribution these particular students will have a rewarding arts experience and successful art project.
In social studies students have been learning about Mexico and Latin America. In the art class, we are connecting to Mexico and the traditional celebration of the day of the dead. Students are using the drape molds as an underlying structure that supports and gives form to their pieces as they continue building layers on a day of the dead mask or Calaveras mask. These molds help students achieve the concave and hollow form needed to create a high quality sculptural mask. Once the students finished adding several layers on the mold, they proceed to add facial features like cheekbones, eyes, chin and brow. Finally, once the work is dry we pull the form off of the mold, we add designs and paint it.
The resources you have donated have helped me connect the art curriculum with the social studies curriculum in order to make students' learning experience more holistic, rich and meaningful. Students are better able to comprehend and learn how art and culture are connected instead of separate subjects. Students were engaged to a far higher degree because of the resources you have donated. Students became more intrinsically motivated and were always excited to work on their project.”
