TThis year my class and I are faced with the challenge of meeting Common Core standards for which they are unprepared. They are in a classroom with no English speaking models except for their teacher. Their progress in English is facing the greatest obstacle known – minimal incentive to communicate in their new language because their peers with whom they spend 6 hours every day in school and their family who holds them dear for the rest of their day cannot help them in their language development because they do not speak English. They left kindergarten without the academic skill set needed to succeed in first grade. They are expected to achieve the CCSS without the necessary tools. That being said, my class and I are ready to take on the challenge, overcome the obstacles placed before us and beat the odds to prepare for an awesome year in 1st as they get ready to succeed in all future grades awaiting them.
