I believe if I get children hooked on playing an instrument when they are young, they will be less likely to get hooked on drugs and involved in gangs when they get older. I teach music to grades pre-k to 5th grade in a Title I school of an economically challenged neighborhood. Everyone in grades prek-2 learn to play the precorder instrument; and everyone in grades 3-5 learn to play the recorder instrument. After students master the art of playing the recorders, they learn xylophone, piano, drums, etc. The students are excited about learning instruments and they love showing off their talents and skills on programs. We have performed at the state music convention, our district's volunteer appreciation breakfast, the food bank gala for the city, hospitals, & nursing homes. I believe in allowing the students to share their talents with our community so people can see the positive things they can do.
