Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my students missed out on early learning opportunities. They are often coming to 1st grade without the necessary skills to start learning how to read. Phonological and phonemic awareness are key skills in learning how to read! We will use the ABC bubble pop its as we stretch out words and match phonemes to graphemes. We will use the magnetic wands and chips to help us say sounds, and blend them into words, we will use the splat game to solidify beginning and ending sounds in words, and the sound box mats and chips to stretch out words as we listen to their sounds and map them on the boards. We will use whiteboards and erasers as we are practicing writing the sounds we hear in words and with beginning spelling. I'm also requesting several books for our classroom! I always want to instill a love of reading and books in my students and feel I can do that by having good, fun stories in our classroom that we can not only enjoy, but that I can also use as teaching tools! I have chosen I have chosen books I can use to teach grammar concepts such as: If You Were a Verb which is fun and also introduces Verbs. I've also chosen titles such as Tacky the Penguin books for funny stories to get kids interested and engaged in story books.
