Our students attend a school which is rich in cultural and linguistic diversity. There are over 10 different languages spoken in our classroom, and most students come from recent immigrant families. Although we are a high poverty school with over 80% of the school population at or below the poverty line, we are attempting to bring art and cultural activities from all over the world to our students.
Through art projects which recognize and rejoice in the different cultural backgrounds of our students, such as the Day of the Dead project, our students not only learn about different cultural practices but they actually get to share in events which are important to their diverse community of peers. In this way, the students in our classroom can truly become a community which supports and understands one another.
