• Luggage and Zippy Bags Needed

  We just got back from the FIRST Championship in Houston (Worlds) and all of our students had these amazing silver suitcases. We also used the big suitcases to keep our boots, large toiletries, and other items that can't go through TSA safe.

  I am so grateful for your support to make sure that all members of our team have the ability to travel without feeling the stigma of not having a carry-on or something other than a basic bag to bring their clothing on our trips. This creates equality on our team as well as makes finding luggage and organization much easier.

• Tablets for Scouting at FIRST Robotics Reefscape Competitions

• Building Our Reefscape Robot (Part 1)

  Funded Jan 15, 2025

  Thank you so much for supporting our team and for making it possible for us to continue to compete at the FIRST Robotics Competition. This is the Reefscape season and we have competed at Portland, ME and Robbinsville, NJ. In Portland, our robot C-horse (ocean based theme) acted like a toddler. We kept having issues after issues after issues. We were the 6th seeded alliance but unfortunately were out in the quarterfinals.

  2 weeks later we went to Robbinsville. This time, we had a robot who wanted to win. We had found the majority of the bugs. We fixed our autonomous. And we were stellar. We won the Excellence in Engineering award and were Finalists. We went 1:1:2 to become finalists, losing two matches with less than a total of 13 points.

  We had a 2.5 piece autonomous. Now we have a 3.0 piece and we are going to compete next weekend. I can't believe the difference between week 1 and week 3. We have qualified for our district championship, and will hopefully qualify for worlds.

• Valentines for Veterans

  This is honestly one of the best community service projects we are able to make each year. My students absolutely love to put together these Valentines. We are able to discuss how the Veterans have kept us safe and how they gave us ability to be a free country.

  My partner at the VA hospital says that some Veterans schedule their appointment on Valentine's Day BECAUSE OF YOU. Because we are able to create these Valentines each year. It reminds them to come in for a check-up.

  This is such a simple thing, but something that our robotics team and students should be thinking about. They should thank those who have helped us. They should think about others. You help us create this environment of thankfulness, gratitude, kindness, and compassion.

• Engineering Moving Dragons for Chinese Lunar New Year (Part 1)

  During January, my students were able to successfully complete their Lunar New Year Project - these amazing CAM dragons. This was such a wonderful project. Here are some things the student's said:

  "How do you come up with these random projects" (I explained DonorsChoose and Lunar New Year's match from Panda Express and how I brainstormed that we could build dragons).

  "What else can we build that we can move?"

  "My family is so excited that you are teaching us about Lunar New Year....no one ever talks about it except possibly in elementary school"

  "What other automata can we build?"

  "I want to make my little brother a real moving dragon from this stuff"

  "Can we 3-D print the cams"

• Robotics Design Curriculum

  Thank you so very much for all of your support of our school and the robotics program here. We have built a 120 lb 5 ft robot and are currently competing around the country. Last week we were finalists and we earned the Excellence in Engineering award: Celebrates the team that demonstrates a professional approach to the design process

  The Guidelines for the award: A team must be able to describe the engineering process they went through and can trace elements of the designs from conception. The designs reflect an engineering solution to a specific problem, and it is functional and practical. The designs are elegant and advantageous on the field of play.

  This is the highest engineering award a team can earn at competition.

• How Was That Built?

  My class wants to thank you so much for this set of books, "How Was That Built". We are currently designing chairs and identifying major types of engineering failures. They are using this text to see examples of how major structures were built and comparing some of the structures that failed, such as the horrible failure in Miami of the Condos and the failure of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

  This generation of student is so fixated on their phones that putting a book in their hands helps them utilize another part of their brain. It does not cause eye strain and they are able to collaborate much easier, not distracted.

  Their current project, the chair, is about them designing two chairs. One is a mostly impractical but asthetically pleasing chair that could be considered modern art. The second one, which is the most challenging, is building a chair completely out of cardboard for our security guard, Gary, who is 6'6", 335 lbs. He is a good sport and we won't let him sit on chairs we know will fail (we put 200 lbs of concrete bricks on it).

  I am waiting to upload photos for this project until we complete these chairs, but I wanted to make sure you get an update and to thank you for giving us these books. These structures are examples of engineering genius and really gives them inspiration.”
