At our school, my teammates and I emphasize the importance of both character and academics. Our students are gritty and optimistic sixth graders. They often come to us more than one grade level behind in reading. Because of their grit and optimism, students at our school often make multiple years of growth in reading in just one year. Non-fiction is a crucial element in the development of literacy; one of the most important critical thinking skills students learn as they transition into middle school are how to make use of information from non-fiction texts. In order to develop and practice these skills, my students need non-fiction materials to read.
