Funded Dec 9, 2023Having books allowed our students to foster deep-rooted discussions on text that mattered to them. We practiced accountable talk by coming prepared to the table with vocabulary, favorite quotes, and questions (clarifying, inferences, and evaluations). We were able to incorporate math into our daily agenda as students calculated how many pages, they needed to read to be ready for our Book Club Friday. Students spent every Friday for six weeks engaging in rich conversations that detailed the challenges and changes within characters and filling their minds with wonderfully interesting Greek gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters. Students who typically have learning happen around them suddenly became the force behind critical conversations. All students truly appreciated holding a book in their hands and waited all week for Friday's conversations. After reading the books, watching the newly released TV episodes, and taking a field trip to our high school for their musical performance of Percy Jackson, students unanimously concluded that the book was their favorite! Thank you for providing our students with such a wonderful learning opportunity!”
