Research has shown that there are long-term benefits for standing desks. With students sitting 50-70% of their day, parents and teachers see students struggling with health, engagement, and academic problems. Moving more and sitting less will help my students with improved physical and mental health. Sitting less and having more choices of where they work (being able to move) has been shown to improve engagement and quality of work. Encouraging my students to have a chance to stand up in class and have a place to work will help to break some sedentary habits that could and probably will stay with them for the rest of their lives as well as help to transfer their learning to go with them for the rest of their lives. Adjustable desks that allow for standing allow for a more productive and enjoyable day simply because students will be less fidgety and disruptive, as movement has been built into their day naturally. Engagement needs focus and having movement naturally into their work day focus is increased. Focus increased allows for enhanced cognitive skills and improve work quality. My students will feel more alert when they are able to stand when they need to and translates into improved focus and a feeling of success. Feelings of success transfer into a caring learning environment where we all feel successful all started because of the physical environment workspace. Within this workspace a supportive classroom culture of collaboration will permeate the room.
