In my first 8 years of teaching, I wanted all my students to memorize all they could from the textbook. But less than 10% would show a large amount of interest and the rest of the students would be going through the motions to graduate or get a good grade. Most students didn’t understand the purpose of chemistry in their everyday lives. Today, I have 100% my students doing the new science standards, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) because everyone wants to. Today, I have 100% of my students drawing models, constructing explanations, and evaluating evidence to better understand a complex and puzzling phenomenon that matters to them, such as global warming, wildfires, and ocean acidification. After facilitating 3-dimensional instruction for the past 4 years, I can never go back to teaching long-lists of detailed facts for students to memorize.
I want a chromebook for every student to access my digital lessons via free online tools and curricula such as google classroom and learn.concord.org. With tools such as these, the students will have access to complex, meaningful, and everyday digital phenomena in every curricular unit that drives the learning for ALL students.
I want a chromebook for every student so that they can access all of my inter-connected lessons in which ALL students will be able to makes sense of scientific phenomena over several weeks, supported with meaningful evidence.
I want a chromebook for every student so that students can investigate phenomena collaboratively, using google apps, in focused online investigations so that ALL students might find the lessons relatable, meaningful, and supportive in their explanations.
I want a chromebook for every student to promote ALL students prior knowledge and experiences as learning assets for ALL students in the class by having them share ideas and evaluate them online.
