Curious Students Need News Mags to Engage with "Real World"

Funded Jul 2, 2012

I want to sincerely express my appreciation for your help in purchasing the Scholastic Scope magazines for my Reading and Language Arts classes. The first two issues arrived during this first 9 weeks, and my students have been so excited to learn that reading non-fiction can be fun as they learn about real-life issues that they care about. They've read about a teenage slave girl in California ("Slavery still exists?" they asked), a young actor in "The Hunger Games," wild bears in Yosemite National Park, and the problem with teens making stunt videos on YouTube, to name a few. These articles have led to many questions and excellent, quality conversations in our classroom.

With new curriculum standards requiring more informational text, your support through this magazine has added immensely to my available resources for the students. The schools have not yet figured out how to provide additional texts to accompany these new standards, much less high-interest texts that students will care about.

These magazines are helping my students learn how to read a text for information, an essential skill they will need to be successful in a good job. Your impact is real, and my students and I are so grateful for your generosity and support of their education.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Webb
