Lights, Document Camera, Action!
Funded Dec 20, 2013The news that our document camera had been funded arrived right before the holiday season. I couldn't think of a better time to talk about the generosity of others. Our students couldn't believe that there were people out there, who they hadn't met-willing to donate their money in order to help them. Thank goodness for modern day package tracking-because the kids asked when their camera was arriving each morning!
We use the document camera throughout the day for various lessons and exercises. The camera is connected to our Smartboard. The Smartboard is an interactive whiteboard that allows us to interact with the computer on a much larger scale. This camera attaches to the Smartboard-and allows the class to interact with its projections. We are able to project writing pieces, samples of work, text taken from primary sources, and much more. Once the images are projected, we are able to focus, edit, and continue to work collectively on the piece.
The document camera has helped boost our written responses to reading and math prompts. The students are able to see their draft pieces on the projection board. Then, they are able to edit and modify the piece within small groups and as a whole class. Students use accountable talk to offer feedback based on the rubric being used to grade the final piece. Many of the students insist their pieces be displayed using the camera. They enjoy seeing their work on a larger scale and having a platform to explain and defend their approaches.
One donor wrote the message "Pay it forward" when they contributed to our proposal. I shared that message with the students. They were so moved to read that there were people out there, cheering on their future successes. Our class is always boasting about the camera and telling the other classes about its functions. They have even offered to loan it out if anyone could use it. We're very fortunate for people like you. Please, know that your donation and compassion has been received by our class.”

Help Make It Right By Making Our Board White!
Funded Jul 31, 2007Thank you so much for your very generous donation. I feel that this easel will prove to be a valuable asset each and every day this year. Not only will it assist me during my lessons but will also serve the children throughout their daily activities. I can already feel that this upcoming school year is starting in the right direction. Thank you once again”
