My first grade students come from lower working class families in California. They come from very meager circumstances. Often they live in converted garages and share their homes with multiple relatives. They are often first or second generation English speakers. All students at my school receive "free" lunch. Although they have circumstantial barriers for success they come eagerly and happily to school each day. They have a fondness for books and love to listen to stories read aloud. During story read-aloud, many will say I can't see because they want to see the story in close view. They look forward to their own personal time with these treasured books.
