  • WK District School Needs Books!

    Funded Oct 21, 2011

If you would've told me a year ago if I thought I would get the experience of watching a 14-year-old hold a brand new book for the very first time I would have dismissed it. That's first of all because it wasn't until this past year that I could've pictured myself as a teacher and secondly because new books were something that I just totally took for granted growing up.

The boxes of books that you helped us to purchase are now on a mobile library which we have labeled and we use to haul reading options between our 5-8 grade classrooms. Titles like Hank the Cowdog, Capital Mysteries, Magic Tree House and others are not only a comfortable yet challenging selection for our kids they are what they are into.

We have received a lot of very outdated and ill-fitting books from donors and organizations across the country but I can tell you first hand that the books you helped us to purchase have allowed our middle schoolers to see reading as "cool" for the first time.

From the staff and students of Wounded Knee School, we thank you so much for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gallacher

  • In Need of Just One Social Studies Text for my Sixth Graders

    Funded Sep 7, 2011

This is entirely too belated and I apologize. But I hope that doesn't make you think that these resources were any less meaningful than they actually were. The books that you have helped fund to send to our school have helped tremendously.

I am the first social studies teacher to ever be at our school. Because of that, the students have very little background on government, geography or the history of our or any society. The social studies texts that you have helped me to purchase will give them a better sense of the world around them, the aspects of a society and how they can best function within it as citizens.

The Wounded Knee Warriors can't thank you enough,

    Dylan Gallacher

    8th Grade Teacher WKDS”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Gallacher

My students are ambitious, bright and hopeful despite all of the reasons for them not to be. Our country has turned its back on the people that were here originally and yet my students haven't internalized the negative messages they've been sent throughout their lives...at least not yet. However, going to a school in the poorest district in our nation and watching their friends and family members never leave the reservation and coast through school with teachers that don't challenge them and without the resources they need starts to wear thin on children. Many of them have hopes of going to college and coming back to work in the schools, hospitals and community colleges on the reservation and attack issues like alcoholism, diabetes, sexual abuse and many of the other terrible aspects of their daily lives. However, without proper textbooks and classroom activities to challenge their minds and engage their passion for learning, many of them don't see school as a positive environment.
