Mrs. Morrow, can you give me piano lessons? Students ask me this question every year. Of course I would love to have a piano lab in my school, but they are extremely expensive. Over the past few years, I have acquired 20 pianos and we have been able to use them in the classroom by sharing, two students to one piano, but the arrangement is far from ideal. But now, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our school is on a modified schedule. Because we cannot sing in school (super spreader), now is the perfect time to teach my students to play the piano. The problem is that many students do not have a piano at home and their families cannot afford to purchase one. My idea is to acquire enough pianos that students can come to the school and check-out a piano, like a library book. I have 20 Casio SA-76 pianos, 20 adapters, and 20 piano lesson books. If I can increase the number to 53, then all of my Honor Chorus students would have access to a keyboard, adapter and piano lesson book and be able to take piano lessons as part of our weekly Google Meet. I will be able to enhance learning for students who have had piano in the past by assigning more advanced music and allow them to move at a more accelerated pace. Learning to read music and then being able to apply it to the piano would make a lasting impact on each student's musicianship and lifelong love of music.
