  • iPad for Learning Language!

    Funded Jun 17, 2016

    Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for helping to fund this project. Now that we are back in school we finally received our iPad and we have already started using it to kickstart the school year! We know that most of us are familiar in how we use technology at home but I figured it would be fun to share how teachers and students use technology at school to help the students.

Being that I teach in a predominantly special needs school along with a highly Spanish speaking school we tend to have students who have trouble accessing the curriculum. They get tired of hearing us as the teachers talk, so that is where the technology comes in. There are so many apps out there that allow the children access to different voices and tones to hear new vocabulary words and spelling games rather than the old ways of flashcards and index cards.

We are located in a high poverty area so the students don't really have iPads at home so getting to have an iPad in the classroom is very exciting to them. With it being the start of the school year I am looking forward to finding out who the tech whiz in our class will be and how this new addition to our classroom with launch relationships amongst the students. Thank you again for this wonderful piece of technology, our class can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hales

  • Markers, Post-its And Dry Erase Oh My!

    Funded Feb 10, 2016

Donors! Thank you so much for all your hard work! We greatly appreciate all your hard work with coming together and donating to our project. The students received our classroom supplies today and they were absolutely thrilled. The colorful box really lit up their eyes with excitement. They are so excited to see what the transformed blackboard is going to look like once we work together as a team to cover it over with white board film.

Writing is always a struggle for our students, so we try to make it simpler for them and swap out loose leaf for post its and that lightens their loads with writing. Well, when they saw all the packs of post its with colors and lines they were beyond overjoyed. Thank you again for all your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hales

  • Reading on Cloud 9

    Funded Jan 18, 2016

Thank you so much for your help getting this project funded. The students are absolutely loving their new reading styles. They have gotten into literature circles now that we have these comfortable pillows because they are actually excited about sitting on the floor with their groups! When the students first saw these pillows they thought they were the coolest things out there. They literally said "Wow actually get to use those?!" I was so excited to give them something from our community members that was purchased just for them. We recently had a debate in our classroom about what the next color of pillows we will be ordering! We thank you so much for your help!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hales

Working in the projects of New York City with special needs students is often overly demanding and rewarding all in one day. My students suffer from a lack of resources that would allow them to enjoy reading and get lost in an author's world. I want for my students to have the chance to love reading and use their imaginations. In our public school we are very limited with reading materials and are often using books from long ago that they can't relate to. I want them to have the same chance I had as a student to fall in love with the escape that can come while falling into a good read.
