Chemistry Artists In Training
Funded Nov 5, 2013I again wanted to thank you very much for the resources so that my class could enhance their learning in chemistry through block-printing. The students were extremely excited to learn in a "non-traditional" manner. They were curious about how block printing worked and in the end I think they developed a deeper connection to the content being taught.
When I first introduced this lesson, I could tell right away that I had increased engagement in my class. The students were excited and for some, slightly worried. I began to hear a few students mention that they weren't very good at art. and they were scared that they wouldn't be able to do the project. As soon as I explained that I would be learning this alongside them, as I had never done this before either, you could almost see their apprehension drain away. Throughout this project, I overheard many students talking about how fun it was and by the end they were all praising each other's work.
The materials you provided worked very well. The block art kit and paints gave a wonderful introduction to the process of block art printing. A number of the students carved into the foam and linoleum included from the kits and then used generic printer paper with the given paint to make their prints. I think some students were a little nervous to use the high quality print paper that was donated, even though I told them it was okay to use. (I think this was linked to a fear that they might do it wrong or mess up). A few of the more adventurous students dove headfirst into the project and used the high quality wood carving tools and wood to make more permanent blocks. I was able to share some of my personal wood carving knowledge to help teach these students proper technique for using and sharpening these tools.
In the end I have to say that I am thrilled with the outcome of this project. I think that seeing that chemistry can be linked to artwork engaged the students beyond the normal class experience. Students learned that some art techniques such as block printing can be fun and are easier than they might have realized. I think that the knowledge of chemistry around chemical bonding and molecular orbital structures that I was trying to reinforce, added an additional connection or link in the student's lives and will allow them to recall and build on this in the future.”
With gratitude,
