And the Award Goes To.... Creating Our Own Book Contest
Funded Feb 13, 2018Thank you so much! Our project is fully funded and we are so grateful for your support of this project and of public education. The PS43 Culturally Relevant Book Award is going to expose all of the 3rd graders at our school to amazing, inspiring children’s literature. They will engage in high level critical literacy as they collaborate to determine a winner and the impact of this investigation will reach far beyond these books and this year. We can’t wait to get started!”

Schools2Schools
Funded Aug 11, 2015Thank you for your generous donation!
In the beginning of the school year, I informed my students that we were receiving new books to add to our classroom library. They were so excited because they had just learned of their new reading levels and they wanted new books to read. They did not enjoy checking out books from our library because baskets with their level books were practically empty and filled with old and torn books. Reading didn't seem interesting and the library didn't seem inviting.
During the month of October, Donors Choose informed me that my books were shipped to my school. However, I could not locate my order. I immediately involved school officials to conduct an investigation. After a few weeks, most of my books were located. Apparently, my order was combined with another teacher's order. It took us a while to sort books, but we did so successfully. Whew! At least we found the books.
When the books arrived to my classroom, students were excited and ready to dive into reading. They examined the new books, accompanying labels (levels) and baskets. Students enjoyed affixing reading level labels on the books and then placing books in assigned baskets. Each student had already placed a "hold" on a book they wanted to read.
Today, my students enjoy visiting our classroom library. They are assigned "shopping days" at which time they are allowed to check out five books - three at their level and two above their level. They are allowed to take books home to read daily which is great because they rarely visit the neighborhood library. I look forward to reading their responses to literature.
Once again, thank you for caring about my students' needs.”

Overhead Projector Cart
Funded Nov 30, 2006Thank you very much for funding my proposal for an overhead projector cart!
My students and I will put the cart to great use. I use my projector every school day to conduct mini-lessons and to model strategies. Right now it sits on the floor when not in use. Every day when I use the projector, I have to pick it up and carry it across the classroom to one of two electrical outlets. I usually set it on a student's desk because I don't have a cart. I have to move the desk across the room as well. The cart will make it so much easier for me to conduct lessons. More importantly, I won't have to worry about dropping my overhead projector.
Again, thank you for your donation.
Sincerely,
Lorraine ”

Bean Bags Seats for Gathering Area
Funded Sep 18, 2006I want to thank you for funding my proposal for bean bags.
Your gracious donation could not have come at a better time. Staff at P.S. 43 were just informed that funds for classroom materials were not available. We were advised to find outside sources and/or to use our annual "Teachers Choice" funds ($225)to help with attaining whatever materials we need to do our jobs. By the way, I exhausted the "Teachers Choice" money in August. I purchased basic school supplies.
It is wonderful to know that someone, like yourself, has such a great interest in helping our inner-city youth. I know students will utilize and enjoy the bean bags. You have helped to create a wonderful learning environment for kids that are less-fortunate. Think about it - these kids don't have a comfy reading place at home. Many of them read at the kitchen table or living room. Often times, they read in a very overcrowded environment. Reading at school is a pleasurable and rewarding experience because I truly try to make them feel comfortable. They will now have their own space. Remember, as mentioned in my proposal, I have students that are bigger than others and are forced to sit outside of the class's "Gathering Area." Now, the bean bags will provide students with their own seating when I conduct lessons in our Gathering Area as well as during their independent reading.
Thanks again for caring about my kids! I know that good things will come your way!
Sincerely,
Lorraine ”

Watch Students Learning in a Flash
Funded Sep 3, 2006Wow! I'm so excited that you chose my proposal to fund.
I'm at a lost for words. Your donation will bring great happiness to my students and their families. I'll be able to take pictures of them engaging in activities from field trips, ballroom dancing, assemblies, classroom activities, etc... starting in September. This means our yearbook will include documentation from the entire school year. Also, students will be able to include photographs in their portfolios. This is great because they have to bring their portfolios to Middle School interviews. I can't wait to receive the materials.
Thank you for caring about my students!
Gratefully yours,
Lorraine ”

Yoga Mats for Our Youth
Funded Jun 22, 2005Thank you so much for funding the yoga mats for my 22 students. My students really wanted the mats during our exercise routines. They hated to workout on the floor which soiled their clothing. My students and I learned that I will be looping with them the upcoming school year. This means that I will be their fifth grade teacher. When they return to school in September, they are going to be so surprised, excited, and appreciative. This is a great way to start a healthy new school year. Thanks again for helping me promote healthy lifestyles”

Book Shelves or Crates
Funded Jun 3, 2005I want to thank you for honoring my proposal. It's great to know someone out there cares about my students' exposure to literacy as much as I do. My students and I are fortunate to possess hundreds of books. Now we are more fortunate because of your donation. It's going to be great to have storage space to display our books. Students will have easy access to these books since they will be arranged on shelves and not in cardboard boxes on the floor.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Lorraine Harri”

Reading Rug for Fourth Graders
Funded Mar 9, 2005I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind and generous donation. My students and I spend a lot of time in our "gathering area" throughout the school day. All 23 students are going to be so pleased to be able to sit on such a beautiful rug. There are not many words to express what your donation means to my class. These children are not used to receiving gifts. I can't wait to see their faces when the rug arrives. Again, thank you.
Sincerely,
