  • Need Books! Books! "Just Mercy"

    Funded Nov 27, 2018

Your donation of a class set of "Just Mercy" has added a great dimension to my course. My students are reading the book over the course of the semester. Every Friday, we have a book chat of 1-2 chapters. These book chats are led by students who have prepared discussion questions for the class to respond to. It has helped reinforce the themes of course which is Criminal Justice System. We will be watching the documentary "13th" after reading the text to supplement our understanding of the injustices of the criminal justice system and the history that has brought us mass incarceration.

The students on a weekly basis are also preparing response journals for me to see how the book is pushing their thinking. They have to react, respond, question, compare/contrast, etc to their own self selected excerpts from the text.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Randle

  • Students Make History Documentaries

    Funded Apr 17, 2018

Your generosity has made it possible for my students to enhance their learning and high school experience. The students are able to demonstrate their learning and understanding in a differentiated format using video. The students are able to express their creativity as well as their appreciation for history and research. The students have used the Go-Pro for making interviews, creating documentaries for history class, and documenting school life. It has been a great addition to our school.

We are currently having a construction project taking place on our new school building and our next project is to use the go-pro technology to take weekly/bi-weekly video of the construction so we can create a time capsule of this history of our school.

Much thanks for expanding the learning and skills of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Randle

I am requesting 40 copies of "Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation" to experience American history not from textbooks. This project will offer my students an alternative to learning about American history. Not just from textbooks and documentaries, but from authentic text. I'm eager to read this text with them and get their reactions and insights from reading these interesting stories about our founding fathers. Their exposure to this college-level text will motivate them to ask good questions and have a greater appreciation for American history. This will make our study of the American Revolution period so much more richer than through traditional teaching opportunities such as documentaries. I think my students will rise to the challenge of reading this text and will enjoy it as much as I have.
