An F-5 tornado recently disrupted the lives of everyone in our city. Although my school was not damaged, many of my children no longer feel safe and secure. They are suffering from the devastation that surrounds them. Many of them had family members and friends who were injured or lost homes. Many parents no longer have jobs as businesses were destroyed. The destruction is everywhere.
Most of my Kindergarten children are from families of poverty, as 87% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Our transiency rate of students moving out or into our school is 53%. Very little in the lives of my children is stable. The majority of my children live either with a single parent or a blended family. Daily survival is the norm for most of my families. My classroom is the one place many children feel safe, secure and successful.
