Thank you so much for providing my classroom with bilingual literature. As a teacher in a dual language classroom, one of the hardest things to do is find literature that is available in both languages that students can continuously follow the story in. One of my main goals with these books is that I wanted my students to fall in love with reading and with these books they did.
Throughout the year, we scanned these books so that students had the opportunities to first, access these books. Some books, we kept as a read aloud. With students coming into my 5th grade class during a pandemic year, many of them have not read a long chapter book in a while.
I've had students who have fell in love with the books so much that they went out and bought a copy themselves and showed it to me. They said it was now their favorite book. Students who beg me to continue reading because they want to know what happens next. Thank you again for helping my students fall in love with reading and organically build reading skills with these books.”

In our class, we use books in the French for Free Voluntary Reading, also referred to as FVR. It is the occasion for students to choose a book that matches their interest, and read this book at their own pace, 5 to 10 min. per day. Books are sorted based on levels of proficiency (year 1, 2, 3) and vary among genre, including graphic novels (a big tradition shared amond several francophone countries) and readers designed for the English speaker learning French. These books offer repetitions in context of phrases we study in class with stories treating topics of friendship, first love, learning to drive that are relatable to students. From this perspective, the wirerack obtain through this project allows students to easily browse the variety of books available to them.”

Thanks to your generous donations, I was able to purchase a one-year subscription to Mary Glasgow Scholastic Magazines in French for all of my classes – French 1, 3, and Advanced Placement French. These authentic French magazines truly helped my students explore a variety of themes around the francophone world. Through the articles, they got to know many people who speak French and look like them. It was so helpful in this environment where students are learning from home to have hard copies of the colorful engaging magazines, as well as access to the digital platform.
In addition to the articles, the digital component of Scholastic Magazines provided in-depth, contextualized activities for students to help them increase their proficiency in French comprehension and expression. Thank you for providing these resources that enriched our class time and brought smiles to the faces of students learning French under challenging circumstances.”
Thank you SO MUCH for funding the online textbook entitled "Voces - Notre Histoire" for my project. It has been absolutely life-changing for my students and I! The textbook is all online and it uses a teaching method called "Comprehensible Input", which I have been trying to transition to for several years. What that means is that the textbook has stories in the target language that the students read or I say and then they answer questions about the stories in the target language, either by speaking or writing in French.
My students are enjoying translating the stories together and participating in the activities which go with the stories. They even have practice activities for their Integrated Performance Assessment, which will be their summative assessment for the semester (or final). My students have also been pleased by the fact that the textbook links to our Learning Management System and it is easy for them to access through the Learning Management System. That has been particularly useful during the Distance Learning Model that our district has used for the first semester of 2020 and will probably continue to use through most of the spring semester of 2021.
I recently gave my students a survey to get feedback about the online textbook and 95% of them stated that they loved the format, access, and activities that go with the textbook. They love that the entire textbook is centered around culture, instead of grammar, as they have learned language in the past. There are not enough words to describe our gratitude in funding this project and how much it has changed how they are learning the French language. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!”
My students are thrilled that they have already received two issues of our French magazine to bring home. They are even more pleased they can actually read them because they are perfect for their novice level. So far the magazine has had several topics that align perfectly with our current themes and students have completed two assignments based on the articles. Students compared and contrasted a French school menu with their own and wrote statements in French how their school lunch is different or similar to the ones displayed in the magazine. Students also read about school closure in France and responded to the "for or against" article on our discussion board. Our next step is to set up the online portion to make the use of the magazine more interactive in case we go fully remote. Thank you so much for making our project a reality.”
Since receiving my donations it has been a struggle to get pictures of my students using the new resources. I haven't been able to see my students in person for more than a few minutes to pick up and drop off work. All of our work has been online but the resources that I received, saved me.
One of my favorite resources were the question flashcards in Spanish that I received. I put an image of the question with visuals to start off our Zoom meetings. As the students arrive, they answer the question in the chat and that is how I take attendance. The students enjoy answering the question as they get to show their interests and diversity through some of the questions. This resources also gives the students consistency and routine in our Zoom Meetings. The students love to go into Breakout rooms and read their dialogues in small groups. The basic dialogue Spanish book have really helped the students become more engaged in small group discussions despite them not being able to physically come to class.
Another resource has been the visual boards that offer vocabulary for students to reference since they aren't able to see my colorful walls everyday.
My English Language learners are still able to learn in a fun way through zoom with our sight words flashcards. We have competitions every Friday for them to beat their personal times and memorization with English sight words. They are determined to beat themselves every week and it is such a joy to watch them learn in a way that they are excited and enthusiastic to take part in.
I couldn't thank each donor enough for the resources they have provided me with. I know that the students will enjoy them even more when we are able to be together again. I cannot wait to use the resources to their full potential.”
Although COVID has prevented us from using the books yet, we were all ecstatic when the big boxes arrived 12 days ago. We are eager to read Frankenstein and Dracula in October, A Christmas Carole in December, and many of Shakespeare's books in the spring. Thanks to the audio discs, students will be able to follow along with the dialogue in the graphic novels. As a teacher, all of the teaching resources and activities will make it easier for me to focus on the language and learning rather than the lesson planning itself!”
