  • Building My Academic Vocabulary

    Funded May 22, 2014

Words are tools for communicating, and my goal with this project was to give my students as many tools to use as I possibly could. Two-thirds of my students are English language learners. Unfortunately, my students won't acquire academic language just by listening to me. I wanted to establish a systematic routine for my students to acquire new terms, and give them a resource they could keep an refer to across the curricula.

These journals have helped to streamline a daily vocabulary routine in my classroom, and have given the students a resource to refer to when they are looking for the appropriate term to use when speaking and writing. We call ourselves "Word Nerds", and the students refer to their journals as their "Desk Dictionaries". We use them in reading groups, writing centers, class discussions, and computer lab. They love having access to the words, with simple definitions, and pictures to help them remember.

These journals have given my students the courage to speak using terms they never would have had the confidence to use in their daily register. They feel so proud of themselves when they use one of the terms in their writing, or find one in their reading. We celebrate every time a word is used correctly in class discussions. And, for these reasons, and many more, I (we) thank you all...for giving us a new toolbox for our words!”

  • Guided Reading Center

    Funded May 12, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donation! My students were thrilled when I showed them all the new guided reading books that you provided for my classroom. My kindergarteners love the non-fiction readers. They love to read about animals, insects, and the world around them.

I use the leveled readers at my guided reading station. My students are engaged and actively learning when we read together in class. When we received these materials many of my students were still struggling with tracking words in a book, identifying common sight words, comprehension, and sounding out words. Now almost all of my students are at grade level. I credit my students advanced reading skills to diligent small group reading, and to these materials.

Your project has boost my teaching and my students' learning by giving them a new outlet to learn reading, and writing skills. My students are excited to work together in small groups and help each other learn and grow. We are so grateful for your kind hearts. Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Waldrum

  • Please Help Cancer Students and Special Need Students

    Funded Apr 25, 2014

Thank you for supporting us with a donation to Donor's Choose. I can't fully express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donation to my project. It is great to see that you share my vision for reaching children. I am so grateful for your donation. Thank you so much for helping students with serious medical issues to succeed in school!

The children enjoy utilizing materials for hands-on learning. With your generous donation, now each child has the writing supplies they need! The families love to see their children so excited about reading, writing and math.

As a National Board Certified Teacher, I plan to share the materials and academic ideas with my colleagues. Thank you so much. I can't wait to introduce these materials to the children. They are so excited. Everyone is so elated! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. B.

  • Motivating Students to Read!

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

Thank you so very much for your generous donations. With your donations, our classroom library has grown tremendously. My students and I are so thankful for each of you. I teach many second language learners, and many of them have not had good reading experiences. They often find reading a chore instead of a fun activity. This is often because they struggle with reading in their second language and do not connect to the texts they are assigned. My students are really enjoying the books purchased with your donations because they are books at their level and about topics that interest them. One student told me she didn't like reading until she discovered Gary Soto's books, now she can't stop reading. Another student said he never knew reading could be fun, but he really enjoys reading about teens his age.

My students have really enjoyed being able to choose from the newly added books. So far I have had several students check out books to take home and read, some even took a couple home to read over their Thanksgiving break. Having books at a variety of levels and topics has allowed students to have more choice in what they read. Some students have chosen the same book as another classmate, and they have found that talking about books can be very engaging.

This project has shown me the importance of choice and interest in student achievement. My students are not only seeing the enjoyment of reading for fun, but they are improving all around as students. They are understanding the texts that we are reading in class and having deeper conversations about them. Again, thank you all for inspiring my students to read by donating to our classroom and allowing us to purchase more books for our classroom library!”

    Mrs. Silva

  • It's Time to Read and Write

    Funded May 14, 2014

Thank you so much for your generous donations. My class has been enjoying the books on CD tremendously. The stories are not only engaging, but humorous as well. The students have been really engaged this trimester in practicing story structure after listening to the literature selections. My students are finally able to understand the role of the character, the setting, the problem and the solution. It is exciting to hear the students define the problem of the character in the story and how the character works to solve the problem.

Currently, I am most excited about the transition the students have made from "listeners" to "readers". Many of the students have discovered that after listening to the story a few times, they are then able to build awareness of the story events from the beginning, to the middle and finally to the end of the story. It is so exciting to see the students go from just listening to the story, to reading along with the text printed in the book not only on their own, but also with a reading buddy.

The journals and primary pencils for writing in the journals have also been a wonderful addition to the learning in our classroom. Over this past trimester, the students have been actively involved in the writing process. At the beginning of the year, some of the students were only able to single words or write very simple sentences, now the students are working on time order paragraphs using the transition words: "First, Next, Then, and Finally". The process over this past trimester has been slow, but very steady from lesson to lesson. During this past week, many of the students had an opportunity to look back over all of the previous pages in their journals. Many students were excited about the progress they had made in their writing, especially the length they are now able to write. I have definitely noticed an increase in my students' writing and in their stamina while writing. Thank you again for your generous donations. This was a gift that will continue to give throughout the rest of their academic career”

  • Take Home Reading Bags for RSP and Intervention Students

    Funded May 23, 2014

Thank you so much for funding my students' waterproof book bags. The students love them! They have been using their book bags to transport their books, reading logs, and sight word flash cards to and from school daily. When it rains, they don't have to worry about getting their materials wet. Their book bags have proven to be very sturdy, withstanding the frequent packing and unpacking into their backpacks.

The students have been very responsible about reading every night, and they look proud to have their bags. We wouldn't have been able to purchase these bags without you.

    Thank you so much!”

  • Multiculturalism in Literacy

    Funded May 29, 2014

"Are we reading Esperanza today?" "Can we please read one more chapter?" These are the direct quotes coming from the mouths of my 6th grade students, often in pleading voices. They are extremely enjoying the novel sets of Esperanza Rising, Seedfolks, and Number the Stars that were provided by the funding of this project. It is exciting to see my Spanish speaking students, many of whom are still considered English Learners feeling empowered because they are reading the Spanish text in the story and being asked by other students how to pronounce certain words while reading Esperanza Rising. My students are able to relate to the characters in the books because they come from the same background of Mexican migrant field workers or other agricultural related jobs that are shared in the stories of Esperanza Rising, Seedfolks and Number the Stars. It has been touching to see many students respond with emotion to the problems faced by the characters in these stories.

Our sixth grade classes are utilizing these novel units in many ways. We are using the books as either class read alouds or for paired readings followed by class discussions. The students are making personal connections with each novel in many ways. They are integrating reading the text with writing by keeping literature response journals and addressing the writing standards with their written responses. The students are also feeling comfortable enough to share their personal experiences relating to the books such as working in the fields and packing houses and their grandparents or parents living in migrant camps. The students are also able to create open mind portraits and puzzle pieces that integrate art and literature using the characters in the books and quotes written to support their growth throughout each story.

The funding of this project has allowed me to embrace the new Common Core standards with excitement because I can use authentic literature to teach the reading literature standards. I no longer have to use choppy excerpts from a basal program that deprives the students of experiencing a full story. I am able to fully teach plot development, character growth, and theme to a deeper level than I could before. The amount of figurative language that these books contain is incredible and very helpful for students to create powerful images that contribute to a better understanding of the text. The diversity of characters in our novels is helping our students make deeper connections with text than any anthology story I have ever read with a class. We are extremely grateful for each donor and their contribution to the education of our students.”

  • Book 'Em... In Bins!

    Funded Apr 29, 2014

The students in my Kindergarten special needs classroom were all so very thankful for your generous support through DonorsChoose last spring. When we received the bins, they came in three big boxes! My students were very curious about what was inside the boxes. After carefully cutting the tape on each of the boxes, I let my students work together to open them. They went a little nuts! So many of the pictures I took of that moment were blurry because they were bopping around!

These blue book bins are super sturdy and look gorgeous. I quickly filled them up with books, bought some labels from TeachersPayTeachers.com that even a mature lady with less than perfect eyesight can read easily, and started the process of organizing our books for easy identification!

Again, without the continued support of donors like you, we as teachers would be hard-pressed to be able to provide even the simplest of supplies, like these book bins, to our classrooms. Hats off to you!”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher

  • Help Us Put The STEM In Our Day!

    Funded May 8, 2014

Thank you so much for supporting my classroom's STEM project. My students have enjoyed every discovery kit and science station we received. The last weeks of school we worked with these kits over several days and I was just thrilled that my students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience! Sometimes their look of concentration was almost too much for words as they tried to replicate the picture on the "Do this" cards, and then they would break out into a big smile as they realized that they were actually doing whatever it was! Children worked in pairs and also side by side on different activities. My students are gaining opportunities to learn and mature in way I could have never imagined. The hours of fun and learning in what was left of the school year can't compare to the many that my classes will experience for years to come.

STEM education in the Early Childhood Special Education classroom really does make a difference, and so do wonderful donors like you!”

  • Writer's Workshop Supplies

    Funded May 5, 2014

Thank you for all of the classroom supplies. They have really helped get us through this year and we have enough to start off next year. We got chart paper, pencils, colorful pens, scissors, tape, staplers, and glue sticks. These are all supplies that the kids go though quickly. During Writer's Workshop I like having a station set up where the kids can help themselves to the supplies. That way they don't have to interrupt me and it makes them responsible for themselves. The chart paper is so nice to have to that I can create charts that are big enough for all of the kids to see no matter where they are in the class. Thank you so much! These supplies have been a life-saver!”

    Mrs. Chavez
