  • MakerSpace in the Classroom!

    Funded Aug 10, 2018

On behalf of everyone at William Ford Elementary I would like to thank you for your very generous sponsorship of our MakerSpace duct tape . It has really sent a buzz through the entire fourth grade classrooms as they all worked on a design challenge to create Checkers boards for their indoor recess. Throughout the process students practiced their Engineering Design Process where they has to think about brainstorm ideas, design and create measurements for their board, and improve their design after creating and testing it to match the criteria and constraints. I enclose some photos of students while working on their project and a thank you card from the entire squad.

Here's to the start of a creative learning! Thank you again for your generous sponsorship. We hope that we will live up to our achievements. We promise to keep you updated of our progress.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hossein

    Funded Aug 20, 2018

In our technology driven society it is important that my students be aware and have hands on experiences with a variety of materials. At the elementary level providing them with an introduction to basic programming tools and language can give them valuable skills that can encourage them to choose a path into different STEAM careers.

With these skills in mind, introducing my students to electrical boards and materials such as arduinos has begun to give them the ability to create and explore using the simple but innovative piece of technology. Arduinos can be used as a stepping stone for my students to begin learning the basics of simple programming, which can progress to the more complicated programming languages such as C++ or Java.

They have begun to learn how to create programs that they use for the arduino which uses colorful light patterns with LED lights. They have used their knowledge to begin making colorful lighted patterns that follow a specified code they have written using the basic coding language they have recently been taught. Using this knowledge they will progress to create more complex projects using the LED lights, as well as sounds controlled by the Arduino. This technology has allowed my students, no matter their level of programming knowledge, to be creative and progress at their own speed and knowledge level.

My students have so far enjoyed the ability to visually see through the colorful use of lights and patterns created with their programs their success in this area. They are looking forward to moving beyond the simple levels of code they have been taught and created so far in order to create even more complicated projects.”

  • Makey Our Makerspace

    Funded Sep 5, 2018

Thank you so much for donating the Modular Robotics Cubelets robot blocks,

Wonder Workshop Dash Robot, Makey Makey An Invention Kit for Everyone, and

20 Makey Makey Projects for the Evil Genius to our gifted classroom. These items have been included in our new MakerSpace area and the students have been able to explore and use their critical thinking skills while creating and building. This project not only funded the materials for our MakerSpace, but it also provided my students with memories that will last a lifetime.

My students have thoroughly loved coding the cubelets to do perform certain tasks. I also had group of girls create a guitar out of cardboard boxes. They then used the Makey Makey kit to actually perform music with the cardboard. It was amazing to see these girls complete this task.

To see their faces light up with smiles and to see them proud of themselves is something I will never forget. Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating these materials for our It allowed my students an opportunity that they would not have had otherwise.”

  • Makerspace Makeover

    Funded Aug 6, 2018

What an exciting way to begin our new school year than with new resources and materials for our students! Not only do we offer books and electronic resources in our Library but we take it a step further to encourage students to explore, move, create and innovate.

Our new green screens allow us to transform our production room into a full 180 degree studio. Here, students record book trailers, have written short skits to perform and record and even did a project about animal habitats that they were completely immersed in! How exciting to bring movie making to our elementary school!!

Not only do they get to be the stars but our 6 Stikbot studios have allowed our students to create videos on a smaller scale as well. We've completed projects about farm animals, trips to outer space and to habitats all over the world. Our students are also eagerly anticipating the introduction of a new LEGO table where their first experience will be to create the Louisville skyline!

This is only the beginning for us! The materials and resources you generously donated will be used for years to come and hundreds of students to enjoy each year.

Thank you, thank you for your kindness. We are so grateful for you and all that you do for our students.”

  • Makerspace STEAM

    Funded Aug 6, 2018

We greatly appreciate your generosity. Our students have been creating and building many different structures with the makerspace items. Students love to see their ideas come to life and push themselves to see how creative they can be. We had students build suspension bridges and then code robots to see if they can make it over. We also had students building cars and windmills that demonstrated potential and kinetic energy. The books give students ideas and a guide to harness their innovation. Making has given students confidence and a creative outlet by using many skills they are developing. They love to see how many ideas they can come up with, design projects, and realize that they can always go beyond.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. G.

  • Makerspace the Library!

    Funded Oct 18, 2018

Thank you so much for your generous donation to support our school library and student learning. The Makerspace supplies have been put to good use since we received them. The students were thrilled to see our new building supplies when they first arrived and we have been able to use them for a lot of really great projects.

In third grade we used the supplies to help us complete our circuit bugs! This was a cool experiment on the impact of system and function and luminescence. We created circuits and used Makerspace tools to build our bugs. The kids were so excited to build and learn and even more pumped to take home their bugs to shares their learning with their families.

Thank you for supporting our classroom and making learning possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bloch

  • Makerspace Masterminds

    Funded Aug 29, 2018

Thanks to your generosity, we now have a functioning Makerspace in our school library! This week was the first week for students in third, fourth and fifth grade to rotate through our Makerspace stations. The stations included a Snap Circuits kit station, a Keva Planks challenge station, a Makedo Cardboard Construction station, a littleBits Code kit station and a Dash robot station. Students collaborated with each other to complete challenges at some stations, while others were designed for free exploration and play.

As I moved about the stations, I observed students challenging themselves, working together and displaying perseverance. There was frustration, joy, disbelief, and exclamations of discovery and success. Here are some things students had to say about our Makerspace.

"I did the stack blocks. When I saw it, it looked boring until I was at that station. When I experienced it I hade (sic) alot (sic) of fun building, playing, and doing the challenges." ~Areli

"What I liked about the cardboard station was that you could make anything you want..." ~Gabby

"We didn't use the book. We just followed our brains." ~Hyde

My favorite day with our new Makerspace happened during parent-teacher conferences. I held a grand opening and invited families to check out our new space. Many parents joined their children to play, explore, create, collaborate and innovate together. Not only is our Makerspace providing the opportunity for students to become more flexible and critical thinkers, it is also encouraging them to build relationships with each other and their families.

My goal for our Makerspace is to empower our students to have a maker mindset and to help them uncover their passions. Your support of this project will reach beyond the walls of the school into the future.”

  • Makerspace in the Making!

    Funded Aug 10, 2018

Thank you very much for your generous donation to help create a maker space for all of our students to utilize.

The students were so excited to help unpack all the new supplies and help design the space themselves. Giving students the opportunity to design and create the space themselves helps them learn about the tools and materials they now have at their disposal to enhance their learning. They discussed how they wanted to set up the space and discussed the pros and cons before setting to work. While they were setting up the space, they made small changes as they saw that their original plans might not work the way they intended. Great critical thinking skills in action!

One class used the space to make projects to make projects to extend their learning during their unit on Ancient China. They created models of the Great Wall of China using various materials. Many groups even recycled materials and used other materials found in recycling bins as well so they could be "green."

The next steps are to invite all the classes in the school to use the space. The variety of materials will help any teacher to enhance their curriculum by bringing their classes in to create and demonstrate their learning. Students will have a choice of how to show their learning in a fun and creative way.”

  • Makerspace Madness

    Funded Jul 27, 2018

thank you so much for contributing to my project "makerspace madness". As a library media specialist I find that it is very important to look into current trends and having a makerspace is so important. Having a makerspace in the library adds some intrigue and brings students who might be worried about entering the library in to explore new options.

It is fun to manipulate objects into something else. My students think it is so cool to take a pipe cleaner and make it into a shape that is related to something in our books. We are working on being really great with piper cleaners.

Smaller students are doing more coloring and drawing. Students get split in half, some go to art and some go to library. The students in art often bring projects home. This made my younger students sad that they often had nothing to show from their library class. Now they get to go home with projects that they've made in library. That's the great thing about makerspaces. You get to learn a new skill and often go home with something in hand.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Monachino

  • Tinkering in the Makerspace!

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

Thank you so much for your generosity and for funding our project. I wish you were there to see the smiling, excited faces as we opened the boxes, revealing the stand up magnetic center and all of the magnetic kits. The students were so excited and couldn't wait to get there hands on it. We quickly had it set up and students took turns trying it out. The magnetic center, along with all of the accessories are now housed in our school's Makerspace. Students from TK to 5th grade go there to learn and innovate. The magnetic center is a favorite for my class. Students are able to work on cooperation and critical thinking skills as they work together to create a moving gear, build a roller coaster or tubing to move balls.

Thank you so much for your support of our classrooms, our school and of public education. You are appreciated!”
