  • That's Some Virus You Got!

    Funded Nov 18, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with the Norton Anti-Virus program we needed to keep our computers up and running.

Throughout the year my students must have access to laptop computers in order to complete the various assignments I give them. We must safeguard our computers to ensure that they are virus free and usable.

Your very generous gift will ensure that my students will have access to working computers and therefore be able to continue their education.

On behalf of myself and all of my students, I thank you all most sincerely.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Preserving Science and Biotechnology.

    Funded Oct 22, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with a refrigerator/freezer and so that we can preserve our temperature sensitive reagents.

Many of the chemical/biological materials and reagents we use for experiments must be stored in a freezer or refrigerator or they will degrade. This is especially true for most of the biotechnology protocols that my students will conduct throughout this year. Until now, I was very limited in what I could do with my students simply because I lacked the means of properly storing my materials. Your very generous gift will allow me to provide a wider range of laboratory activities than I have in the past.

Thank you all for supporting my students in their quest for knowledge and for supporting public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Got DNA?

    Funded Nov 7, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with the DNA model kits.

All of my students are English Language Learners (ELL's) and as such, they learn best by doing. Having access the hands-on learning tools like the model kits helps my students better understand the complex concepts in science. They are able to see how the structures fit together and can be arranged in many different ways- thus leading to the diversity of genes and traits.

Thank you all for actively supporting my students in their quest for knowledge, and for supporting public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Got Protein? Part 2

    Funded Nov 15, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with the materials needed to conduct our experiments on proteins and enzymes.

At our school, we use experiential learning strategies, or hands-on activities so that students learn by doing. This method is especially useful for English Language Learners (ELL's) which makes up 100% of our population. One of the experiments that the students conducted involved the study of specific types of proteins like enzymes and how to best measure the impact environmental changes on their effectiveness.

Thank you all for actively supporting my students and public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Sandy Won't Stop Our Biotech Course!!! Part 5

    Funded Nov 15, 2012

Thank you all for donating to this project and providing my students with the Bio-Rad Genes in a Bottle DNA extraction kits.

My students truly enjoyed the entire process while they learned how to extract DNA from their own cheek cells. The technique used in this simple procedure simulates how it is done in college or medical research facilities. They were amazed how easy it was to collect. But the best part was that they could stain and store their own DNA in a glass vial that doubled as a necklace. Word got out throughout the school and now everyone wants to collect their own DNA.

Thank you all for making this possible and bringing excitement into the sciences. This will long be remembered by my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Paper and Quills

    Funded Nov 5, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing my students with the poster-sized "post-its" and markers.

Your very generous gift has allowed my students to work in cooperative groups that share ideas and express themselves in creative and colorful ways. Our schools strives to provide as many outlets and means of expression as possible, thus enabling every student to participate and be successful.

Thank you so much for contributing to the learning and growing process of our students. Thank you for supporting public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Got Protein?

    Funded Oct 17, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing the protein reagents we requested in order to conduct protein analysis labs.

Unfortunately, due to the impact of Super Storm Sandy, most of my temperature sensitive materials, like the proteins you provided, were severely compromised. We were unable to conduct our scheduled experiments at this time, but thankfully, with the help of generous and caring people like you, we were able to replace the materials. We will continue with our research of proteins at a later date.

The accompanying photos are of my students presenting another lab exercise involving a specific type of protein known as enzymes.

Again, thank you for supporting my students in their quest for knowledge.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust
