My students are first graders at a new urban charter school in New York. 85% of our students' families are living below the poverty line. The majority of our students came to us well below grade level. Our school has an environmental science focus. We take weekly field trips to participating local resources such as the botanic gardens, the zoo, community gardens, children's museums and parks. Our kids are mini scientists- constantly asking questions and wondering about their world. Through interactions with these incredible resources, our students' imaginations, vocabularies and curiosities soar. In an effort to catch our students up to grade level, we try to break them up into small groups as often as possible. This reduces the student-teacher ratio as well as distractions from learning. Small group work is an essential component to our classroom. It is also integral to helping children work together and problem solve.
