  • Help The Students Of Today With Great Technology

    Funded May 16, 2012

Thank you so much for your wonderful donation. Without your donation and kindness my class would not be able to use technology that connects them to our great world of information. Your great gift of a laptop has allowed my students to do research and find great information for their animal reports. Also the printer has allowed them to print colored pictures and learn about different topics in science. Learning with a laptop and using colored pictures is fun and exciting for my students. Using technology in the class has motivated my 7th and 8th grade students to keep on learning English and science! Thank you so much for making our dream into a reality!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Menchaca

  • Electro-Shocking Investigations

    Funded May 16, 2012

I would like to thank you for your generous contribution to the Science Lab at our school. My 5th grade students have been using the snap circuit kits for 3 weeks now, and I have plans to introduce them to my 3rd and 2nd grade classes soon.

I wish you could have been in my classes to hear the children's excitement upon first opening the kits, and eventually their amazement about what they were able to accomplish. One young woman said, "I can't believe I was able to build that! This is the best day of my life."

Thank you for making these moments possible for our children, and sharing my dream: that the children of today develop a curiosity about science and confidence in their ability to approach and overcome the new challenges they face.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Angela Willis

  • Manipulating Mathematics

    Funded Sep 4, 2012

I really want to thank you for your donations. The Real-World Math Problem Solving Kits has enable my students to solve the types of real world math problems they encounter every day. My students especially enjoyed solving problems such as paying restaurant bills, and using basic operations to solve real world job responsibility problems. The Problem Solving Kits support the Common Core State Math Standards. I really appreciate the Real World Problem Solving Kits. The Problem Solving Kits has helped my students make connections to the real world and see how to use math in the real world. Thanks so much for really making a difference in how students learn math in the real world.”

  • Numbers and Animals All the Way!

    Funded Jun 7, 2012

I would like to thank all of you for your donations. Thanks to your donations we were able to get different math file folder games and math center games. These math games have really made a difference in my classroom.

I have seen a difference in my students math scores since we started using these games during independent work time. My students work independently while I work with students focusing on their needs. My students show a better understanding of the curriculum and vocabulary thanks to these materials.

Thank you for making a difference in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Moreno

  • Math in Magazines!

    Funded May 30, 2012

Thank you so much for your gracious donation to my Donors Choose project! It is the awesome support from donors like you that makes an impact in my classroom. Some of the lesser-known resources can be the best learning materials, such as Scholastic Math Magazine that you helped to fund. This magazine has been an extremely engaging resource and activity in my classroom!

Scholastic Math Magazine is a full-color print magazine that is delivered to our class each month. It is full of articles that the students can't wait to get their hands on about pop culture, animals, sports, the Presidential election, and so much more.

These entertaining articles have been a "sneaky" way for me to incorporate math in an even more fun way. My students are able to practice their reading skills with the articles, but then we also are able to use the content to practice their math skills with the questions that are included. My students are truly loving their new magazines and I can't thank you enough for your support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Bridges

  • Programming Visual Math for Middle Schoolers!

    Funded Jun 25, 2012

Thank you all again for bringing this grant to life - you have vividly impacted the way in which math can be understood and developed in our classroom. You have not only bolstered the resources available for the creation of effective projects and presentations, but have also allowed students to develop presentation skills reliant upon math fluency (imagine students of varying mathematical and social abilities enthusiastic about their creations.)

Math fluency is able to be developed by every student, though, as we can all relate, traditional math classrooms have not always incorporated the most captivating aspects within the world of math. Through your charity you have directly fostered the development of an upcoming cohort of doctors, architects, engineers, musicians, and artists of all sorts, linguists, orators, and other profound thinkers intent on making constructive improvements in the world - all through contributing to our math community.

You have brightened the days of many, many students. My students are excited to both teach and learn with their peers, and will hopefully continue to be throughout the course of their academic careers - thanks to you all. Thank you for you charitable donation to public schools - you have made an absolutely outstanding contribution to the development of student thinking, reasoning, and constructive action.”

  • Let's Go To The Video Tape.

    Funded Jun 19, 2012

Thank you all for funding this project and providing video cameras to my students so that we can record and view the presentations that they make of their laboratory experiments.

Your very generous gift allows my students a unique opportunity to see themselves in action and to learn from previous presentations. Since all of my students are English Language Learners (ELL's) every chance to present their knowledge is also a chance to practice and improve the language acquisition. The ability to see and hear themselves over the course of a year will greatly enhance their self-esteem.

Thank you for being a part of their learning. Thank you for supporting public education in New York City.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Oszust

  • Help The Next Generation Of BioChemists!

    Funded Jul 6, 2012

Thank you so very much for your donation of a refrigerator to our school for the use in the biochemistry class. In this class we cover how the biochemistry of fruit leads to its ripening, rotting, and preservation. In all our science courses at Essex Street Academy, we stress critical thinking skills and development of unique experiments that include a background, procedures, analysis of data, and more. The students are entirely responsible for their experiments from the beginning. Your contribution allows our students to come up with their own experimental questions and work through them without the limitation of lacking materials. With the refrigerator, the students have been able to test how different temperatures affect the rotting of fruit. They have been able to observe firsthand how freezing helps to preserve the fruit in the state it was frozen in, stopping the production of ethylene and preventing bacteria from breaking down the fruit. This has opened up the realm of possibilities for the students and they are so grateful to be able to use this new refrigerator in order to test their hypotheses.”

    Ms. Spiegel

  • Learning Through Games

    Funded May 22, 2012

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your generous donations. My students and I appreciate your kindness, and we are grateful to have people like you to give back to our community.

The students have been so excited to use the games that were funded in this project. They always ask me if there is "extra time" to play. I remember the reactions of the students as we opened the boxes together. The students faces were lit with joy and excitement. It felt as if it was Christmas morning. The "oohs and ahhhhs" were priceless.

I have noticed the children working together in collaboration and teamwork, as they use these materials. The games have also built in social structures, where the students are polite, treat each other with respect, and take turns. It is great to see how much fun and learning is taking place by playing these board games. The students are definitely learning and reviewing language and math skills.

We are so grateful for the thoughtfulness with your contribution to our project. Thank you again for all your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tan

  • Supplies That Teach

    Funded Jul 18, 2012

My students and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the calendar, the hundred pocket chart, the birthday stickers, the star student supplies and the bracelets.

The calendar helps us learn to count, learn the days of the week, the months, and even the weather and the seasons. We love to wear our star student crowns and birthday stickers. We also love our different color bracelets given to us when we do an excellent job. We now know how to use place value and count by 10's.

Thank you so much for giving us our supplies that teach. We love it and all the students who will follow after us will love it too.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Coupet
