The hospital room is my classroom. I have been a teacher for the NYC Department of Education for 32 years. The students I work with have been admitted to the hospital, some for the everyday traumas of childhood, like appendicitis and broken bones, but others are frequent fliers: the victims of chronic or acute illnesses such as sickle cell anemia, asthma or cancer.
Sometimes these students are alone for hours during the day, e.g., when parents have no choice but to work. Or when there are other children or ill family members at home. Obviously illness presents challenges to a child's education, but not only for the child. A hospital teacher has to think outside the box. How can I get materials to the bedside of ill students? How can I maintain a sterile environment? How can I motivate students who may be hurting or depressed? How can I make their lives better? Those are the questions I try to answer with my projects.
