  • Let There Be Light - Round 3

    Funded Sep 27, 2024

Thank you for bringing more "light" into my classroom community. Light has such a big impact in creating a warm and inviting space.

Our clam area has been popular with our students. Students from other classes have even asked to stop by our clam area to enjoy the string lights and lava lamp.

The Be Kind light has been a fun addition to the classroom because I talk about kindness all the time and refer to the light in my room.

I am truly blessed to be able to create a welcoming and safe space for students at my school. Thank you again for your generous donation. I also want to give a special shoutout to the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation for supporting educators!”

  • Classroom Essentials

    Funded Feb 25, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to "Classroom Essentials."

By far, the most needed item in this project was the copy paper. I have been able to print and copy knowing I have enough to get me through the end of the school year.

From the pencils, pencil sharpener, and stapler, all of these classroom essentials were much needed and appreciated as I wrap up the 23-24 school year.

As my students head into the second week of DC CAPE testing, I look forward to using the essential oil in class to calm the mood as we let go of all the testing stress.

Thank you again for your donation and support for public education and DC Schools!”

  • 5th Graders Learning About Innovation and Inventions

    Funded Mar 18, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to "5th Graders Learning About Innovation and Inventions!"

My 5th grade students have completed another great unit in ELA, learning about different Inventors and Innovators in history. This project allowed me to provide resources to support my students interests in learning more about Black innovation. One of the innovators that sparked their interests during this unit was Lonnie Johnson, the inventor of the Super Soaker.

During this unit, I built in time for my students time to learn more about Lonnie Johnson. We read a book, watched an interview he had done on CBS Sunday Morning, and even designed our own super soakers. It was a joyful learning experience to have my students excited about a topic that they picked and wanted to learn more about.

Thank you from the 5th grade Innovators at Plummer Elementary and myself for donating books to our library. I look forward to building our library next year as I continue to support 5th grade as a Special Education teacher.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nadia

  • 4th Graders Rocking and Rolling

    Funded Mar 18, 2024

Thank you for your generous donation to "4th Graders Rocking and Rolling." The 4th grade students at Plummer enjoyed using all of the materials in this project.

The colorful and glossy pages of the many resource books were getting my students excited to read and learn about rocks and minerals. This was a huge win because books over anything with a screen is a hard sell. I even heard a student who does not express interest in books say out loud to her friends, "I want this book." The student was referring to the Rock and Mineral Encyclopedia - another huge win because encyclopedias are a great resource and we don't use them enough.

The students loved the hands on experience of observing all of the rocks and minerals. Students naturally began to sort the rocks and minerals by a variety of categories including color and rock type. I loved how my students even connected the obsidian rock to the game of Minecraft. Looks like I need to get my game hat on and see what other teacher connections I can make to Minecraft!

Another great resources in this project was of course the Rock and Mineral bingo game. The 4th grade students at Plummer love a great learning game. Having a game already created about our topic made my job easy as a teacher to lesson prep and share with my students.

Thank you again for your support in helping to make this unit more engaging for my students with this project. Next year will be my second year teaching 4th grade and I look forward to making this unit even more fun and engaging for the students at Plummer.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nadia

  • Pk Panthers Living a Black Panther Dream

    Funded Apr 3, 2023

Thank you for your donation to my Black Panther project which focused on resources to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics) in my classroom.

I am so glad that I have another class of students this school year that enjoy reading. All of the books were loved, especially the Dinosaur book and Black Panther books. It is a magical experience every time to see students looking through books and labeling pictures and making connections to previous knowledge.

This project truly allowed me to experience a forgotten PK past time - creating things that move! From the duplo lego number train set to the picasso magnetic cars, my students were creating and building a variety of transportation vehicles. The moving vehicles stemmed new conversations with my students including topics such as: transportation, how we can move objects, describing what cars look like, mobile homes, learning about trains, and talking about places we can travel to.

Thank you again for your generous donation and bringing joy to my classroom. I hope you have a great summer and enjoy a few STEM experiences in nature.”

  • Butterfly Study - Spring 2023

    Funded May 12, 2023

Thank you for your donation to my second butterfly project as a ECE teacher. It brought so much joy to my students and myself to bring the natural environment into our classroom. Some of my favorite things that I got to experience with my students included:

-Creating butterfly stories using many of the new loose parts (rocks, butterfly life cycle toys and counters, and mirrored letters).

-During the different stages of the butterfly cycle (Caterpillar, Chrysalis, Butterfly), students had an opportunity to write and draw their observations during morning journal.

-Students worked on an art project throughout the butterfly life cycle. First, students created a caterpillar using pom poms and a popsicle stick. Students then wrapped their caterpillar with tissue to represent the chrysalis. Finally, using the new markers and a coffee filter, students created wings for their butterfly.

-Releasing the butterflies and wishing them well. Some of my students messages to the butterflies included: wishing them a happy life and asking them to come back and visit us.

An unexpected outcome of this project was that a few items were not able to be ordered. I was able to go through my wish list of items for my classroom and ordered a few learning games. The animal memory game was a big hit with my students. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to order a few games to build up my classroom resources.

Thank you again for your generous donation. Wishing you a happy summer!”

I am a Special Education teacher. This 24-25 school year will be my fourth year teaching at Plummer Elementary School. In my teaching practice, I try to encompass the theory of Reggio Emelia introduced by Loris Malaguzzi. Here is one of my favorite quotes about children: "The child has a hundred languages, a hundred hands, a hundred thoughts, a hundred ways of thinking, of playing, of speaking. A hundred always a hundred ways of listening, of marveling of loving, a hundred joys for singing and understanding, a hundred worlds to discover, a hundred worlds to invent, a hundred worlds to dream..."
