  • Firing Up Our Learning

    Funded Aug 24, 2017

We are able to use the technology to work in small groups and have one to one technology. It has been helpful for students to use apps that they are interested in to facilitate their learning.

Students were excited to get the tablets because they could read more books that they were interested in if we did not have a hard copy available in the classroom. These have really come in handy during independent reading and the students are really enjoying them.

Thank you again for helping to fund our project!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kaskiewicz

  • Sit and Relax!

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

My students and I use the new carpet everyday. We use it for classroom read alouds and for students to sit and during lessons. Students also really like sitting there to read independently or to work in small groups or partners with each other. Sometimes they even go to the carpet for a little time out to calm down.

When my students first saw the new carpet, they were excited. They said that it matched the rest of the decorations in our classroom and it made the classroom feel more calm. They all love being on the carpet whenever they can.

My next project will be to hopefully get more math manipulatives so that students can use them to access the math content more efficiently. Right now we share a bunch with the grade and it just isn't helpful. We need our own so that students are able to get them and use them whenever they need to.

Thank you again for helping to fund our project! We are enjoying our rug this year and I know my students to come will also enjoy the nice calm space it helps to create!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kaskiewicz

  • Let's Get Organized!

    Funded Nov 17, 2019

This year was a little different than the past years. We changed from self contained classrooms to me teaching math and science. Independent reading time was not in the schedule for math and science so I had to be creative. We used these book boxes in multiple ways. First we used them in our classroom cubbies for students belongings because they had to share cubbies. The students were very excited to have a place to put their snacks and other belongings so that they were "safe" for when the other class came in for their math and science time. They also were very happy that the boxes were brand new and that they were able to be the first class to use them.

After a while, students started leaving their snacks and food in the bins for days and forgetting about them so we stopped using the bins for that. We then used them for group folders and science materials. This worked really well and we were able to keep things organized and everyone knew where to put their materials.

We then had enough book boxes to use them as they are intended to be used, as book boxes for independent reading. I implemented some quiet time between class transitions where my homeroom students would have time to get some extra independent reading in, while having time to regroup themselves before their next transition. Each student again had their own book box for their chosen books.

Unfortunately, they have been left with the books the kids were reading when we abruptly left for what we thought were only going to be two weeks that turned into the rest of the school year.

Thank you for your generous donations to this project and I can't wait to be able to use these book boxes again next year when I get to teach reading and writing again!”

  • Showing Off With An ELMO

    Funded Apr 5, 2011

I would like to say thank you to all of you who donated to our project. We have enjoyed using it in reading and writing class. We have used it to do class read alouds. This is important because we do not have copies for all students to have their own to read from. The kids love having books read aloud to them so that we can discuss the books as a class.

We have also used the ELMO in our writing class. This term we were writing personal narratives. The ELMO was very helpful because I no longer have to make transparencies (which our school ran out of, so I would have had to buy them myself) if I wanted to model parts of the writing process for the class. The students particularly loved the ELMO because they could share their personal narratives with each other and show their pictures they created to go in there book. They were also able to put their books on the ELMO and read them aloud to each other.

This has been a very versatile piece of technology for our classroom. I am excited to use it more for next year. Thank you again for all of your help in making this dream a reality. You have made my students and I very happy and we are thankful for all of you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kaskiewicz

In my classroom I have 25 third graders. Many of them come from Spanish speaking families and are unable to get the support they need at home. My students work hard and want to learn new things. They have a huge interest in electronics and seem motivated to learn when they are able to use the Ipads we have in the school. In Lawrence, we do not always have the funds to purchase the things that our students need. As teachers, we try to provide them with these things out of our own pocket. It is my hope that through Donors Choose that I can give my students what they need to succeed in third grade.
