My students are incredible, and they have been through so much. Following Katrina, my students (already behind) have a lot of catching-up to do, especially in science. They attend a charter school in Louisiana with extremely limited funding for science equipment. This year especially has been tighter than before, and while I was able to get sheep hearts for my 7th graders last year, there is no money to do the same for this year. I had hospital equipment (seen in the photograph) donated, and my students still talk about how incredible an experience it was to dissect a heart. This has inspired me to continue to keep science as interactive as possible for them, but I can't do it by myself. Allowing my kids opportunities to dissect animals, raise butterflies, or interact with the rocks and minerals we're learning about lets me teach them better and helps them to learn better. My kids have rough home lives, and their behavior is much improved when they are engaged and interested.
