My students are between the ages of 5 and 11. We are a public school in the inter-city with 87% of our students being classified as Economically Disadvantaged. Along with the disadvantage comes the lack of computer skills when they start kindergarten. Many have never seen a computer and most have never used one. Our students also come with a thirst of learning new things ... especially hands-on things, like computers, that make learning real for them. How can our "Economically Disadvantaged" students know what it's like to live in China, for example, without actually seeing pictures of China, emailing someone from China or hearing Chinese spoken? The computer can bring all of that to life for them.
