  • Hip Hop Therapy - Constructing a Live-Room Recording Studio

    Funded Dec 20, 2016

Words cannot describe how thankful I am for your support in creating an amazing classroom, and classroom experience, for my students. Through acquiring the materials from this donorschoose project, I have been able to take a group of 20 students through 2 sections of a Hip Hop Lyricism course designed to help them sort-through emotional struggles through constructing a hip hop album. Although we are yet to complete the school year, and the album itself, I have watched my students grow tremendously throughout this process.

It has been most exciting to watch the students take ownership of the classroom experience. Students have become incredibly comfortable using the technology, which has allowed for student-designed lessons and group activities. My students have learned to use the space without much involvement from myself. Often times, students will file into the room and get right to work without any guidance.

Overall, I have seen dramatic increases in self-esteem, and self-efficacy, to engage in lyric writing and recording of emotional themed music. I have seen significant changes in students ability to take action to cope with the emotional stress they face. I have also witnessed students develop positive mindsets, as a result of sorting through negative interpersonal experiences.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Levy

  • Using Hip Hop as Therapy in Schools

    Funded Sep 2, 2015

Words cannot explain my gratitude in regards to your generous donation. The funding you provided has helped me cultivate a much needed safe space within our school for students to work though difficult emotional experiences. Through our engagement in Hip Hop Therapy based work, students have been able to channel hidden emotions in a way that has bolster their self-awareness, self-esteem, attendance, and academic performance. We are so thankful for your help in building this space. In addition, our school has been highlighted for our innovative work in Hip Hop Therapy. Recently we were featured in the NY Times, and received subsequent features on FOX 5 NY, Univision, and in Complex and XXL Magazines. I have shared the links below for your to see. Thank you again.

The vast majority of my students are Bronx, NY born and raised. I say this because, so is Hip Hop culture. My students are hip hop to the core and are best summed up by the phrase "real recognize real". These young people are incredibly eager to learn, they want to do well in school, but will not give you the time of day unless you show them respect. This respect comes from the formation of academic spaces that make students feel comfort and belonging. Showing them they can use who they are to be successful in school and beyond. Luckily the high school in which I work is dedicated to engaging young people through their culture, and helping them develop emotionally and academically. I have been given the green light by my administration to do this Hip Hop Therapy work. My school is centered in a fairly underdeveloped area of the Bronx and is a prime location to begin integrating culturally relevant counseling curriculum.
