  • Computer Center For Special Needs Students

    Funded Nov 7, 2012

My project has been funded, and I am tremendously excited! With your support, I will be able to turn my classroom into a more engaging place, where students of all abilities will be able to learn. Today, computers have become such a useful tool in helping students who struggle to learn in school. I am confident that having a computer center for my special needs students and second language learners to use, will boost their self-confidence, and thus increase their reading comprehension and reading fluency. The computer purchased will also be used to help the students create personalized books; research topics, learn new vocabulary, increase their math skills and much more.

Once again, thank you so much for choosing our project.

    Cheers!"”

  • Primary Students Love Hands-on Science

    Funded Apr 23, 2012

Thank you so much for selecting my proposal to fund. This hands-on science approach really has my students excited about learning! Your generous donation has allow my class to experience first hand the life cycle of a plant with the "Watch and Grow" plant kits, and plant theme boxes. They have learned to identify various types of seeds; they've learned about the migration of various seeds and even had the opportunity to dissect a bean and conduct several bean related experiments. This project has been a great vehicle for making learning science fun and exciting for my first grade students. They are learning to use scientific words and tools to describe and document their observations. Most importantly, they are having fun. The students rush into class every day and immediately run to their plant to check how much it grew.

    Thanks again!

  • Using The Digital Camera In A Primary Classroom

    Funded Jun 1, 2011

The digital camera provided to my classroom has allowed me to give my students exposure to fun and exciting activities related to photography and creative writing. Here is a sampling of some of the activities we have started to explore: journal writing - with lots of photographs; letter writing; creating a classroom newspaper - read all about us; fiction writing; and comic strips. In the future, we will be using the digital camera to make paper bag books; composing an autobiography; and writing, illustrating, and binding their own book for submission to a young authors contest.

Each and every child has some artistic abilities. In some these grow extensively and in others it needs to be continuously nourished. The primary use for the camera will be to inspire my students to write by employing the use of photographs that have a strong personal connection to the world around them. My goal is to make writing a fun and effortless process for my students. The broad impact of this project is to have my student leave my classroom with a general understanding of: generating photographs that help them document and express their individual ideas.”

Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in the city of Chicago. With a population of over 1800 students in grades k-8, we are happy to boast about the fact the we have an attendance rate of over 95%. Yes, our students enjoy coming to school. Our school is designated as a Fine Arts neighborhood school with an open enrollment. My experience has thought me that many of the students entering the first grade do not like to write. For some it may be difficult for them to control the movement of their pencil on the paper, and others simply cannot come up with something to write about. Yet, the ability to write clearly and legibly is important for all students and we teachers need to provide additional help for our students to improve their writing skills. By incorporating arts and crafts during my writing sessions and journaling at this young age, I hope to prevent negative feelings towards writing in
