We Can Make Good Choices!
Funded Oct 23, 2014We were so excited to receive our package of books for our project "We Can Make Good Choices!". The students helped me open the package and we went through the box looking at every book we got. We voted to decide which book we would read first. The winner was "Curious George Cleans Up". I was very happy with the results because we have been learning about natural resources and how important it is to take care of our environment. The students have been using this book as a reference all week for their natural resources unit of study.
We have also been practicing how to work in a group. This package has been monumentally helpful for teaching and learning about this difficult kindergarten skill! We have read "Manners at School", "Share and Take Turns", "Mine! Mine! Mine!", and "Time to Say Please". I have seen some amazing improvement in how the students talk to each other while they are working with their group. We have made a chart to display the information from the books and we review it before doing group work. They are having polite conversations and are not afraid to disagree with someone in a constructive way. The manners have also transferred over to their conversations at lunch and recess. We are soon going to move on to bullying and how to deal with someone who is being a bully.
These books have been a tremendous resource for teaching manners and social skills both inside and outside the classroom. I am very excited to start the year off with these books next year so students can have an early start on these essential skills that they can use for the rest of their lives!”
With gratitude,
