Comfort and Joy in the Library
Funded Dec 11, 2021Without a doubt the happiest place in most schools is the library. Since getting the library position at Middletown Elementary School, my goal was to create a space when students are comfortable and have the latest books and resources. The library is filled with soft lights, plants and light music is always playing.
A library should be a place where students want to be, a place where students aren't distracted. This grant provided soft comfortable furniture, inviting students to sit and read and be comfortable!
Thank you to the kind generosity of strangers and Middletown community members.”

Funded Mar 2, 2020The Middletown Library is filled with great books, and now, thanks to this project, filled with current graphic novels on a variety of genres.
There is a group of readers in the library that struggle every day in the library finding something that appeals to them. There are "stuck" not able to find something. They have low reading abilities with low interest. Since discovering graphic novels, they are able to now feel the satisfaction of starting and finishing a book. They are able to participate in a book study and contribute to the conversation.
Great books in all genres, reading abilities, and interests - it's a good thing.”

Funded Dec 30, 2019To me, the is nothing great than a librarian seeing students with new books, oh the smell, the feel, the newness!! At Middletown Elementary, the library is filled with amazing books that have been well-loved, year after year. Seeing the books tattered, torn, stained and sometimes, smelly, only says one thing - these books have been read over and over and over again.
When I arrived at Middletown Elementary, I began checking out these very worn books without excitement. While many would say a student doesn't know the difference between a new and worn book and they'll still love it, I would disagree.
The small budget at my school doesn't allow me to replace all the well-loved books so the donors that supported my project, "Replacing Well-Loved Books" have really made a difference. Many students are giving these books another read, because really, who doesn't new books!”

Mr. Jeffrey

Complete the Series!
Funded Jun 12, 2017Getting students hooked on reading is a challenge in today digital world. Our library is filled with series written by great authors. As librarian I attempt to get students excited about reading a series, because I know if they love one, they want more. Your grant allowed my to purchase books that completed many of our series. Each time a student completes a series, I take their photo and share on the @qaelibrary twitter feed. In the actual tweet I like to include the author's twitter handle so they know someone is reading their books. It's very common that the author will write something encouraging to the reader.”

Understanding Dyslexia
Funded Oct 7, 2014The series "Hank Zipner" is all about a young boy with dyslexia. Because of your generous donation we were able to purchase the entire series for students to check out in the library. We have a large population of students with special learning needs. The characters in the Hank Zipzer series have become a catalyst for teaching opportunities. Through events and actions in the story, our students gain a better understanding of a friend with that may have a learning disability. Our students with dyslexia connect with the characters because they identify with Hank and his problems and realize they are not alone.
We can't thank you enough for your kindness and compassion in allowing us to use literature to teach young minds that the world is big and that we are unique and there are others who think and learn differently then ourselves.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Jeffrey
