  • Community Helpers

    Funded Jul 23, 2012

Thank you SO much for your donations to my project. I am glad that you share my passion for integrating dramatic play into the classroom. So often, the demands of meeting testing requirements can make teachers feel pressure to cut out dramatic play. But I believe that students learn best in an authentic context. The costumes and vocabulary cards will provide a great opportunity for the kids to practice social studies concepts in my dramatic play station. Thank you, again, for your donations. I look forward to using these items in my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gorham

  • Go Away, Big Green Monster! Using Puppets to Retell Stories

    Funded Aug 10, 2011

Thank you so much for donating to my project! My students use the puppets every day. I have put the puppets in our Drama Station and the kids use them to retell stories. Retelling stories is a difficult skill for kindergarteners, so it is helpful for them to have the puppets. They serve as a visual reminder of the characters and the events in the story.

As a first year teacher, it is difficult to supply my students with all of the supplies that a veteran teacher is able to provide. Without your donations I would not have been able to provide an engaging and successful Drama Station. Thank you, again, for donating to this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gorham

My students attend a public school in Virginia. We are in one of the largest counties in the state and the 19th most mobile school in the county. This mean that many families move into the neighborhood for a few years and then move away. Because of this, we have a limited amount of time to build the foundations of reading for these students. The majority of the student population is of Asian descent. 35% of the students have limited English proficiency. Puppets and props are a non-verbal cue that can help students with limited English proficiency read and re-tell stories. Puppets are also beneficial to the students who prefer to learn kinesthetically, or with their bodies. The physical touch and manipulation of props will help with retelling stories.
