My students attend a public school in Virginia. We are in one of the largest counties in the state and the 19th most mobile school in the county. This mean that many families move into the neighborhood for a few years and then move away. Because of this, we have a limited amount of time to build the foundations of reading for these students. The majority of the student population is of Asian descent. 35% of the students have limited English proficiency. Puppets and props are a non-verbal cue that can help students with limited English proficiency read and re-tell stories. Puppets are also beneficial to the students who prefer to learn kinesthetically, or with their bodies. The physical touch and manipulation of props will help with retelling stories.
