Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 10th grade English in a violent, urban school in an area of extreme poverty. My students in particular have only recently learned how to speak English or are still struggling with the English they will need to know in college and the workforce. They especially struggle with independent reading. Also, due to budget constraints, my budding artists do not currently have access to any art history or fine arts courses.

My students are unique because they have amazing eyes for art and yet do not read or express themselves in writing very well. Graphic novels can help build a bridge for them to access college level concepts and texts. They will be interested, accommodated and able to succeed in ways they have never experienced before.

Copies of Maus and Persepolis will fill many needs. My underprivileged students would have access to historically-based texts that show the importance of empathy and survival. Also, they would be able to connect to the art and images in the text at any reading level. Finally, they will experience an advanced level text that will help make them college ready. Win-Win-Win, right?

We can't do this without your help. You will bring art to urban students. You will make history come alive. You will make literacy a possibility for literally hundreds of young men and women. Most importantly, you will show that caring and kindness exist in the world outside of our community; perhaps the most valuable lesson of all.
