Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a sixth grade teacher at a Title One school in Northern California. I have a self contained class of English language learners and all of my students, as sweet and adorable as they are, have been classified as struggling students based upon their academic performance. My challenge this year, is to not only help them become more proficient academically, but also enjoy the process!

My students have access to the basic core novels required my the state for them to read, however I want to give them an opportunity to read another great novel together this school year, that is both fun and engaging. I believe that by providing children with an opportunity to read great novels at a young age, you can create in them a love of reading that is beneficial long term. The novel that I am requesting as a class is a little above the current reading levels of my students, but I feel that with guidance and interpretation, they can read it and enjoy it with success.

The resource I am requesting for my class is a set of books entitled, Mrs. Frisby and the rats of NHIM. This would be a book that we would read and discuss as a class that I feel they would enjoy and become engaged in. I foresee engaging my students in a wide range of conversations and quick writes on topics from this novel from family bonds, to genetics that would be cross-curricular and very beneficial.

By supplying my class with this set of books, you will ensure us many hours of cooperative reading, discussion, and learning, that will not only be interesting to my students, but fun as well. This is a great novel, and I truly believe my students will enjoy reading it as a class! Thank you so much for considering my group.
