Get 'em Going with Games!

My students need 5 activities, games, and centers for mathematics.

I am entering my second year of teaching. I teach fourth grade in six subject areas to twenty-four students daily. A thought crossed my mind recently which led me to ask for your help. Why do we expect children to sit down, read a text book, stay focused, and remember the content when most of them are thinking about what the cafeteria will be serving that day for lunch or the latest game that they can't wait to get home to play?

It is difficult to get students hooked on math with just a text book to read from and a work book to work from. Catching and keeping the attention of a 4th grade student for more than fifteen minutes while they are sitting at their desk feels nearly impossible. Once students have lost interest, behavior problems begin to occur. When behavior problems are occurring, learning time is lost. Research shows that a student’s quality of learning is enhanced when they are up and active. I need materials that will give students the opportunity to participate in active learning so that the content will be more interesting to them. At the same time I need materials that will reinforce and cement vital concepts that they will use throughout their lives.

In order to reach this goal I am asking for your help to get necessary resources for my class. I want to make math exciting, active, and memorable for my students. I feel that the materials I am requesting will allow me to do this because the learning process will go from Plain Jane, snoring boring to something that catches their attention because it seems more like an activity or game. The Math Game Library will spice up math centers with fun and excitement that a lot of manipulatives tend to lack. The Math Bingo Library will give the students to opportunity to practice multiplication, division, fractions, etc. in an energized atmosphere. The Real-World Problem Solving Kit will help the students connect how concepts they learn every day apply in the real world. Build-A-Story Problem Flip Books would be a wonderful resource to have because they would help my students prepare for the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test in April. Math Start Stories would be an amusing way to introduce a new concept so that the students are interested from the get-go. I think the addition of these materials will allow my students to get the most out of math.

These days children are surrounded by games, television and all sorts of technology many of us don’t even understand yet we expect them to come to school and stay focused by giving them a worksheet? I don't think so! They need activities to catch their attention, but better yet...with your help we can make those activities fun and educational. By doing so, we just might be creating a life-long learner in all of them.
