Photography is an art form, not just for snapshots! My 5th grade students are hard-working English Learners in an urban district.

They are used to using a digital camera for family snapshots, and they are familiar with common school art materials. However, they are new to the idea that the camera can be used for the wonderful art of photography!

With 10 digital cameras- one for every three students- I can teach them about framing, perspective, lighting, and capturing a moment. We can push beyond the regular art projects and see the world through the lens for a change. We can also use photos as inspiration for our writing. English Learners can especially benefit, as they can find an image that motivates them and then write and talk about it.

With your generosity, classes of 5th graders for years to come can explore the wonders of photography. Maybe, just maybe, a student who struggles with drawing and painting will find out that he or she IS, indeed, an artist!
