  • Super Science Symphony

    Funded Jan 12, 2011

Thanks you so much for your donations that allowed my class to get the super science kits from Lakeshore. These kits contain many great materials and have helped make science real to my students. My students were able to use a variety of tools to measure weather, build ramps to study motion, and put together simple machines and electrical circuits to study electricity and machines. Because of these materials my students gained a deeper understanding of these topics. I look forward to using these materials in the future and thank you for your help in obtaining them. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jones

  • Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

    Funded Dec 14, 2010

Thank you so much for your wonderful donation. I fell in love with this book the first time I read it, and I knew my kids could get so much out of it. I hope that the life lessons in The Last Lecture will provide my your students with a path forward through high school and beyond. Once we have finished this book, we will continue our discussion on childhood dreams and lead into a discussion on colleges and beyond. Many of my students are reading ahead, and they are incredibly enthusiastic about the book and its message.

    Thank you once again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Miles

  • Help Us Transform Our Education Through Organization

    Funded Dec 4, 2010

Thank you so much for your contributions to my classroom! The binders, organizers, pencil cases, and other organizational supplies have really helped to transform my 4th grade scholars into College Scholar.

Before receiving these organizational materials, students were constantly losing or forgetting homework, class notes, and supplies. Now, they take pride in having the neat binders and are almost always prepared for class. It's been a joy to watch them remind each other to copy the day's homework into their planners and to watch as their level of personal responsibility has grown. Thanks to you, my students are learning the habits and mindsets that will help them to be successful well in the future.

Again, thank you for your generosity. Without your help, my students would not be where they are today.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. O.

  • And All Because of a Smile

    Funded Nov 16, 2010

First of all, thank you for contributing to a simple, but effective feel-good project. A certificate may seem like a paper to many, but for my kids it's a positive affirmation of their hard work and effort. The certificates have motivated my students to strive for their very best everyday. Truly, giving a certificate to a student for passing a math quiz brings more than just a smile; it brings a big boost to their self-esteem.

As a matter a fact, there is more to tell. A parent recently called me to tell me how much she appreciates the certificates her son had been taking home. She said her son proudly displays the certificates in his room. She also mentioned how his behavior at home has changed for the good, and how positive his attitude has changed towards his homework.

Another parent mentioned during a casual conversation how the certificates had helped her daughter focus on her studying. Not only did her daughter like receiving the certificates and getting recognized at school and home, she also became aware that all the small accomplishments she was being rewarded for were helping her out towards raising her math grade. While most adults understand that we take a step at a time to reach our goals, 6th graders are just becoming aware of how grades and goal setting actually work.

Not only do my students love their certificates, but it also has become very important to them to be able to show their accomplishments to the rest of their family. Parents feel good because their child received a certificate, and the feel-good feeling is passed back to the student. Thank you for providing the feel-good feeling to everybody, from the teacher, to the students, to the parents, and back to the ones who matter most, the students

Thank you for your kindness and thank you for caring about our future. I hope the certificates my students created for you carry the same type of feel-good feeling we are all feeling here in our classroom. Let our smiles shine! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. R.

  • Experiential Education: Bags Packed for Adventure

    Funded Jan 26, 2011

Thank you so much for your support. We just returned from our trip. The kids loved the backpacks. It made packing and traveling as a group so much easier. They felt like adventurers heading out in to the Wild West. We had two different groups of students use them so far. Some students took them to the Dominican Republic for a service learning trip while others traveled on a river rafting trip to Arizona and Utah. We are including pictures from both trips as well as a few of the packs. The packs were awesome, but we thought you'd also enjoy pictures of the trips they traveled on.

Please continue to support education, especially experiential education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Thompson

  • Project and Click!

    Funded Jan 23, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous contributions to our class. We really appreciate the fact that you took the time to donate to our project. My class uses technology in every subject throughout the day and we are enjoying the versatility the wireless mice offer. The main reason I wanted the wireless mice is so that I could use Mouse Mischief , a free software program offered by Microsoft. It allows my students the chance to respond individually to questions. It's like having a clicker, but it's a lot less expensive! My students enjoy it, even though I haven't worked out all the kinks in using it. They have wonderful lessons for every subject, and I have taken advantage of that, and I am using the lessons as another way to engage my class. Thank you again for your donations! It's people like you who make it easier for teachers like myself, I applaud you!:)”

  • The Grade Pushing Projector!

    Funded Nov 30, 2010

I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My students and I use our classroom projector literally everyday. Your generosity has enabled me to do all the things I wanted to do with a permanent classroom projector, and infinite things I never even imagined.

I am a fourth grade math and science teacher. We have done virtual science experiments, watched videos about the careers and professions that use the skills we're learning about, and of course the occasional "Magic School Bus" episode. (They tie in so nicely with our science lessons :-) ).

In addition to exciting math and science lessons, I have been able to broaden my students' sociological perspectives enormously. My classroom constantly takes advantage of our culture's instant transference of information and news. We have watched Anderson Cooper report on Libya and Japan, learned about nuclear disasters and the importance of renewable resources, skyped college students to gain their perspectives, and so much more.

On behalf of all my students, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Your donation continues to change lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bowles

  • Math They Can Feel

    Funded Nov 16, 2010

On behalf of my classroom and our school, I'd like to extend a warm and grateful thank you for your generous donation. Like many charter schools around the nation, we are feeling the effects of the state of our economy in our budget. Your dedication to help schools by donating through Donors Choose shows your caring and sympathy for our troubled public education system. Any help that we receive will greatly impact our mission to equip our students with the character and academic skills needed to succeed in life.

Your donation for our math manipulatives, including pattern blocks, geoboards, and 100 boards, has had an amazing impact on my students by providing them with engaging activities that challenge them to think critically and practice math skills. As you may read in the letters from my students, they love the games and activities we do with these materials, all of which provide an intellectual challenge while at the same time being extremely fun. Some of the students have even taken it upon themselves to organize competitions to test their skill at the various games. It's great to see students so excited and proud of their intelligence, particularly in our neighborhood, where intelligence is not always held in high regard, at least among youth. This excitement and pride is thanks in large part to the materials you have provided.

Again, please know that your generosity is helping many of these students at this school and that our students' abilities to care for what they are give will ensure usage of these materials by future students. Your contribution is helping me to continue to effectively guide our children to a better life and a better future. Take care!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Hureau

  • Bullies Don't Win: Teaching Through Video How to Stand Up

    Funded Feb 25, 2011

Your gift will make a difference in the lives of students who need that difference the most - those who are shunned, isolated, ridiculed and hurt by others - the bullied.

I was moved to action in the Fall of 2010 when the news was full of stories about a young college student who committed suicide because his roommate posted videos Online of him without his knowledge or permission. I first posted this grant application at that time with the hope and belief that I could galvanize my group of high school seniors who wished to make a difference in kids' lives. Now that the project is funded, we are planning to move forward with the video plan. It will be 2011-12 school year before they are ready to be shared with students, but I firmly believe that what they do will change the life of bullied students, and you helped make that happen.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jackson

  • Time and Sound Classroom Management

    Funded Nov 16, 2010

First of all and foremost, thank you for your donation to help fund this project and make it a reality. I noise management tool, the Yacker Tracker, and a time management tool, the Time Timer, may not seem as critical tools in the classroom, but they have really helped me manage my classroom better. The tools have also helped my students discipline themselves and become more focused on what they are doing.

The Yacker Tracker is like having a second adult in the classroom. Although it sometimes annoys some students, they are becoming aware of appropriate noise level a classroom should function in. The Time Timer is loved by everybody. The tool has helped, both fast and slow workers, become aware of how there time is being occupied in the classroom. They are experiences the importance of staying focused.

Again, thank you for your donation... and for supporting public schools. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. R.
