I teach in a small, rural school district in western Kansas. On average, I have 22 students in my first grade classroom. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds such as farming families, 2-parent families, single parent families, low-income, non-English speaking, and migrant. I typically have 2-3 students in my classroom who qualify for Special Education services and about 4-5 who qualify for Title I services in math or reading. I like to engage my students in hands-on activities as much as I can. I feel that I get the best response and motivation from them when we do these types of activities. We explore with STEM activities throughout the school year as the students create their own STEM projects to solve problems.
