My Students

Do you like to cook? Do you think it's important for 5 and 6 year old children to learn through hands-on experiences?

I teach First Grade at a charter school located in a high poverty, high crime neighborhood in New York City.

More than 85% of the students in my school qualify for free lunch. I work with some of the most underprivileged students in the country who also happen to be some of the smartest, most thoughtful and most caring human beings I've ever met. My First Graders are curious, motivated and love learning. I am passionate about creating a classroom community where all children have equal opportunities to learn and this means having access to the best learning materials possible.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of different cooking materials that will provide my students with the opportunity to cook in the classroom. Included in this list are mixing and measuring utensils, bowls, a griddle, a hot plate, a convection oven and a cart to hold everything. We can strengthen the home-school relationship by having students' families come in to cook with us. I've also requested a few cookbooks that have excellent "kid friendly" recipes, as well as some fiction books so students can read about cooking while they wait for their food to cook!! After school, I teach a 2nd grade Gardening class with my students from last year. I'm hoping to be able to grow fruits and vegetables in our school garden, then harvest them and use them to cook!

My students learn best through hands-on experiences.

Cooking in the classroom will provide the opportunity to combine math (part-to-whole relationships - fractions), science (combining different kinds of matter), literacy (reading about cooking and writing our own recipe books) and social skills (sharing, taking turns, problem solving). My students will use these priceless skills for the rest of their lives. Thank you for reading. Happy cooking!!
