Words Do Matter

My students need these literacy manipulatives to allow me to teach using best practices. One strategy is for students to build sight words daily using letter tiles.

My Students

A typical day is filled with excitement from start to finish. We start our day in literacy instruction. We have a mix of independent reading, shared or interactive reading, guided reading and purposeful practice centers, word work and writers' workshop. Then we transition into mathematicians.

Our school is in a small rural town in Tennessee that currently enrolls around 370 students in grades PreK-5.

Over 50% of the students in my building receive free or reduced lunch. We currently have 46 first grade students, and of those students, only 15 are reading at or above grade level. I have a mixture of these readers in my classroom of 15 first graders. With these 15 eager readers comes 15 different goals and objectives. However, the common goal between all of them is to become a higher level, more fluent reader. My goal and my school's goal, as noted on our website, is to "ensure a solid foundation by providing positive relationships and relevant, rigorous student-centered learning that is evidenced by strong achievement." With the proper manipulatives, this goal can be achieved for all 46 first graders at my school.

My Project

To help build my students' word recognition, I am providing differentiated sight word lists for all students based on Fountas and Pinnell's Word Matters. One strategy of this practice is for students to build their words daily using letter tiles. The extensive research, provided by F&P, has proven this hands-on method effective due to its kinesthetic nature. After attending professional development sessions and collaborating with other teachers who have implemented this word work with great success, I am beginning to work towards implementation in my classroom. My first activity for students to implement into their daily routine would be a Build, Mix, Fix regiment. With this skill building activity, students will build their differentiated words using these letter tiles, then mix the letters of the word, then lastly fix the letters back to make their word. By students repeating this activity daily, their word recognition will grow as well as their individual reading levels.

My goal is to ensure that all students are reading at or above grade level expectation by the end of the year.

Building sight word knowledge will ensure that my students get there. My intention is to continue implementing this effective strategy throughout the coming years, and share these strategies with my colleagues to continue to develop reading and writing skills in all 46 first grade students.
