This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Can you imagine Kindergarten without crayons? Even with the help of family donations, our school lacks some of the most basic supplies needed to kick off the school year.
My 23 Kindergartners are energetic and eager to learn, but they face some pretty big challenges.
They live in a poverty-level neighborhood in one of the largest cities in the country, where unemployment is high and resources are scarce. Most of my students are already victims of the achievement gap, beginning Kindergarten behind their peers. Our school is a small charter which aims to instill in students a sense of responsibility while creating academically prepared citizens. Our goal is that every one of our graduating eighth graders will go to a selective-enrollment high school. Although my students are coming in behind where they should have been, I have no doubt that they will be on track and reading by the end of the year.
My Project
In Ms. H.'s classroom we focus on what we can do to grow our brains every single day, and we do the best with what we have. However, we would do a lot better if we had some more basic supplies. For example, special composition notebooks with developmentally appropriate lines and spots for a picture will help students develop as writers while also providing them with a space to keep stories and reflect on their progress. In addition, construction paper will enhance science projects by allowing students to make models of the concepts they are learning about, such as the water cycle or the butterfly life cycle. During carpet time on our special ABC carpet, students receive important instruction in all subjects. With a class set of write and wipe boards, I will be able to quickly child student understanding during the lesson and ensure that I am meeting every child's needs. Overall, this grant will fund basic tools that will enhance learning on a day-to-day basis.
The quality of your education should not be determined by your zip code.
Every student deserves to learn in a classroom equipped to best meet his or her needs. Adding these basic supplies to our classroom will increase learning in all subjects and gear us up for our journey through The Land of I Can.
