What about the students that want to learn to play music, but don't want to play the instruments in the band? Where are the classes for them to play instruments that aren't played at half time at the football game?
My students live in and around a small, rural town that is far away from opportunities found in larger communities.
The students typically come from very low income houses and the parents usually work in the poultry industry.
These students are amazing. They can sing, dance, draw, and excel in other arts. They appreciate music and would love to learn how to play it.
My Project
My goal is to create a ukulele club that will be able to perform at assemblies and our annual talent show. This will be an after school club which will meet for an hour after school two times a week. I chose six ukuleles to start with because I am not a music teacher and teaching music is new to me.
My goal is for the students to learn how to play a fun musical instrument. Through this they will be exposed to many different genres of music that they may not otherwise experience. They will learn to become more publicly confident through performing for groups.
Schools need to offer more experiences than the Three R's.
The arts are woefully under-represented in many schools. This is an opportunity for you to help some of my students have that experience. Thank you for your support.
