My students need a United States map carpet to reinforce our letter writing, state shape geography project.

My Students

My students are welcomed each day with a smile. We are a room full of students immersed in a theme. They ask questions and we research. They get excited about what they learn, and love to share their new knowledge.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds.

They may have very different lives outside of school, but when they are here, it is important that they feel welcome and included in everything that we do. My students are at many different levels academically and socially, but we work together for the best environment for everyone. Our school is located in an area of very diverse socioeconomic families. We provide a variety of enrichment classes for all of our students, which gives them a chance to express themselves through music, art, technology and physical activity.

My Project

My students have been learning about the United States! They are practicing their writing by writing letters to different states to find out more about the states. They are also learning the shapes of the states, and how many miles their letters have traveled. It would be wonderful for the students to be able to use this carpet for their map activity. They would be able to find their states, compare distances, compare state shapes, and even work on North, South, East and West!

Most of my students have never left the state that they live in.

It has been wonderful to see their faces light up when they share their new knowledge with others. This addition to my classroom would allow the students to physically explore the states. I would love to watch them interact and compare the states as they move around the rug. Many games and future activities will be associated with the United States rug.
