"An investment in education ALWAYS pays the best interest!" Invest in technology to support the students succeed in reading and math.
I want my second grade students to gain independence and take control of their learning.
I also want my students to be well prepared for the next grade level, but it can be challenging since many students do not have the resources needed to succeed at their highest potential. My second grade students are absolutely fabulous this year. I teach in a low income area in North Carolina. All of the students in my class love learning, but learning is not always supported at home due to both parents working many hours or students are raised in a single parent home. In fact many parents are not able to help their child with educational goals because they are working long hours to support the family. Many students are also Spanish speaking so it adds a whole new challenge when teaching. Very few families have computers in the home as well as books to read with their children. Much of what the students learn comes from the classroom and parents are very appreciative and wonderful.
Since students come to my class with a wide range of prior knowledge in basic skills, the iPad educational programs would be able to tailor to their specific needs. The students would be able to use the touch screen to write cursive letters, read content rich stories to guide in their literacy development, and work on phonics skills. We do many fun activities in the classroom, but technology is another exciting way to engage students in their learning. The iPads would be used in centers as well as individually to help struggling readers achieve success. Students will be able to record themselves reading with a partner in centers and then revisit their reading to help improve fluency. I can't wait to use this piece of technology to enrich my students' learning in the classroom and I know they will be so grateful and excited to use them!
The donations for my project will offer my students a fun and interactive way for becoming better readers.
Most students do not have access to technology at home and would benefit from the use of the iPads. The iPads would be used for learning and practicing skills learned in class. Most importantly, the iPads would reinforce both their knowledge and enthusiasm for learning. I am confident that the iPads will provide a more engaging learning experience as well as improve student achievement!
