Our high school offers a variety of skill levels and opportunities in the Visual Arts. Art 1 - Art 4, AP Art, Photography and now VISUAL FX(effects)! We want to give our students the skills they need to create whatever they can imagine. As Walt Disney said, "If you can dream it, you can do it."
My students are highly motivated.
They are hungry for new and challenging art experiences beyond traditional drawing, painting and sculpting. Three years ago our community created a Haunted House fundraiser for our local Community Center and our Visual Arts Department. Inspired by the haunted house, our students are begging for a class to learn the skills of Visual Effects artists. The haunted house fundraiser helps to pay for basic supplies like paper, pencils, paint and clay, but does not cover the new VFX class. My students are very interested in pursuing practical careers in the Visual Arts like special effects make-up, prop making and costume fabrication. This new VFX class will help them work towards their desired careers.
There are many Visual Effects projects we can create on a budget, but professional mask and prosthetic making is not one of them. We need head armatures, monster clay and quality tools. Although I have over 30 students in my VFX class, I am not asking for an entire class set. We will work in small groups and then rotate throughout the school year, to complete projects. Not only will my students learn new skills, we will apply cross-curriculum learning with our Science Department. Prior knowledge of human anatomy will be applied by sculpting muscular and skeletal systems. Human facial proportions will also reinforce math skills with a practical application of fractions.
This project will give my students experiences that will not only enhance their problem solving skills, but prepare them for desired future careers.
We live in a city where VFX, and Art in general, is NOT seen as a realistic career goal. In a situation like ours, we must create opportunities for ourselves. My students are incredibly talented, they just need a chance to prove it. Help my students fulfill their dreams.
